I've owned both 964 and 993. The 964 was great fun, but had major reliability issues.
The 993 has more power,no serious engine issues, 6 speed gear box, better looking body, better brakes, better suspension. The 964 has primitive suspension, ugly plastic body kit and massive reliability issues. There really is no contest.

Of course the newer the 911 the better it gets.. duh!
Sorry but the 993 doesn't do much for me in the body department. I'll stick to my 964 or earlier. You're right, for me there is no contest.

Hesitant to post asking price as this is primarily an american forum and your cars are a lot less expensive. I have it listed at $32995 cdn on autotrader. Not too many of these cars (964's) in Calgary therefore the price is a lot higher than many south of me. Of course I'm open to offers.
The 993 I was looking to buy became unavailable to me today as I had today to finalize the sale. Unfortunately, although I had a few very interested buyers, I couldn't get a firm committment to buy. Oh well, I guess it wasnt meant to be.

Significant 964 reliability issues during 4 years of ownership as follows. (60,000 mile car)
Hydraulic Brake booster/4WD system never worked properly.
Engine - oil leaks from cylinder heads, camshaft housing and various oil lines.
Heating ventilation system - constant faults - never worked properly.
Rust in all the usual places.
Everytime I got in, something else went wrong.
But, it was still a great car with huge character, great fun to drive, and I loved the full red leather interior.
OK, so maybe I bought a bad example, but those faults were not unique to my car. I understand Porsche fixed many of the problems on the later cars, but mine was an early 1989 C4.
Yes, I agree if you modify your 964 I agree you can create a great car, but the posters above were implying the 993 was a backward step, which I felt I had to correct for reasons of balance.

Its all good fellas. I still totally love my 964. I've never owned a car that gets as many looks, waves and smiles as this car does. Just thought I would change things up a bit.

Derek:
While I really like my 993, I couldn't see moving to one from a 964, except for maybe having the bigger trunk, which gives greater luggage security when touring.
There is supposed to be less road noise coming through the rear suspension into the chassis, but I don't know how significant that is. Oh yeah, and the air conditioning.
I assume you have driven the 993, but if you haven't, contact me, and we can do a little comparison run out to Exshaw and back, on the old road, (after the Stampede is over ).

There are too many cars out there that I want to try and enjoy....the 964 is one of many. Too bad it didn't work out but it's not like the position you were in before was too bad. Enjoy the car as much as you can.
