First free evening with Shrek. I have driven it, at least 4 miles. Everything I remembered about 911s.
The car has genuinely not thrown a single alarm at me! There are quite a few things to do, of which a non-functioning horn (died on me during the first drive) and some leak underneath near the center diff lock are high on the list; but for tonight, the steering wheel is the first candidate.
The wheel in the car is the orignal to the car as the date stamp attests. The first owner must have held it in that one spot forever! Not to mention it is rather large at 380mm,and far from me (I have looong legs).
So, out comes the 360mm, extended hub wheel. The horn pad is not the definitive one, thanks to Paul Champagne, but this will do for now. About 1000% better.
Ilko,
It *would* be cool if it had been maintained at all. Leather is smooth and supple as fossilised cardboard.
I hope to at least stop the decay by impregnation with leather oils. The major league warpage is here to stay though.
Leather dye, leather cleaner and conditioner are your friends... for really badly neglected leather look at the Leather Soffner product from Color+ (Color plus).
Best of luck... I've just started down this path myself. The nice thing is you can do things gradually and still drive the car
Last update.
Installed the finished wheel today. It has the extended hub for better ergonomy.
I also cleaned the dial rubber rings and treated them with glycerin. I think the picture speaks for itself.
And since I have enough Nappa fine leather, I covered the ignition trim, as no amount of cleaning would turn it back to black from its faded whitish color.
The least visible detail here is the new pedal rubbers. the originals were a hair away from wearing through to the metal.
No Airbag originally in this '89.
The smooth leather I got from a local upholstery shop, the perforated and the engraved leather from Paul Champagne, who was great to deal with.
