Euro-RS Gearbox / LSD oil
The LSD oil in my Euro-RS is due to be changed.
Are the gearbox and LSD oils drained/filled independently - i.e. do they share they same oil or are they entirely separate?
Any recommendations for best oil to use?
Any tips on changing?
Does the car need to be raised level - or can I simply jack and support the rear up high enough to get to the drain/fill plugs?
I've used Swepco in my Porsche gearboxes in the past and it's available here in the UK..
Many thanks for any advice.

Do a search "G50 transmission oil" and you will find that most people like either Mobil 1 delvac 75W90 (used to be Mobil 1 SHC 75W90) or Redline 75W90 NS, the G50 transaxle is gearbox and differential all in one housing i.e. same oil one fill. If you do the job yourself, which is straight forward, make sure to UNDO the filler plug first before you drain the oil, it can be a PITA to get undone. And yes, lift the car up so it sits level and let it drain for a bit and then fill to the point where oil starts to flow out of the filler hole, about 3.8 L

You may have a problem finding the LS version of the Mobil 1 75w90 in the UK; at the last service of my turbo I couldn't find a stockist anywhere. The solution is to use the normal Mobil 1 75w90 and use an LSD additive (friction modifier), Redline do one - it's less than a tenner.

factory fill on all the Cups and RS has been Mobil 1 SHC, which had a name change to Delvac a few years ago. This oil is not the run of the mill stuff found in most parts stores and is more likely to be found at a hd equipment shop.
This is the oil you want

Yep. The SHC is what I got - but the LS-suffixed version reccomended for limited slip differentials is not available outside of bulk 25 litre drums in the UK - I spoke to the importers themselves and they had no alternative sources. Hence my use of Mobil SHC 75w90 (which I found was available from most motorsport/racing stores) and a Redline LSD additive.

from the factory manuals
Gearbox oil Mobilube SHC
Steering servo oil Pentosin
Fuel98 RON Super plus lead free
Brake and clutch fluid Endless RF - 650 Racing Super Fluid, part number. 996.355.960.90
again SHC has been renamed "Delvac", there used to be a Delvac LS but that is NLA either and apparantly it's not necessary
the only "LS" version currently available is the flaps Mobilelube HD LS 80w/90 which you don't want, the LS friction modifiers may be ok for the lsd friction disks but not so good for the syncros.

Well that's what nearly all of the guys on the 964 Turbo section are running - no problems reported from anyone. Those who have used the straight SHC gearbox oil have reported increased chattering and noisy differentials compared to those using the limited slip. In cases where that has happened, changing the fluid back out to the LS version has cured the problem.
The HD LS 80w90 is not what I was referring to. The SHC LS 75w90 is listed here (in the large quantity I was referring to), and also on Exxon Mobil's list here.

The 964t's seem to have their own unique problems. If it works for you fine. I'm just reporting what the factory has been using for quite a few years now. and what seems to work fine in my 993Cup transmission

Bill , are you sure this is not just a transatlantic thing? Many things get renamed or have their brand name change for copyright reasons from USA to UK. Could Delvac be a US trade name for the Mobil SHC ? I don't think the UK sells Delvac but does sell Mobil ? Opal fruits to starbursts and marthon to snickers come to mind.

There are several options that will work well. I don't really think that there is one that really stands out from the others and can be said to be the absolute best. Personally, we have always had good success with Swepco 201 for the streets, and Swepco 210 for the track. I don't think that you can go wrong with either of these options.
Like I said though there are several others that are fine too.

The reason that you want to use the SHC or Delvac version of the Mobil oil is that the LS version is too slippery and does not allow the synchros to grab the gear appropriately and can cause grinding of the gears. The SHC, without the limited slip modifiers solves this issue. A side effect is that the differential plates do not slide as well and in some cases can chatter a bit which is noticable under slow speed turning. It is annoying at the most, but does not cause noticable wear issues.
The old standard for 915 gearboxes - Swepco (201 I think) is not really the appropriate gear oil for these gearboxes.

Geoffery, have you had any experience with REDLINE 75W90 NS; seems a lot of people like the product?

Geoffrey,
Why are you under the impression Swepco would not be appropriate for later generation gearboxes? Have you had some bad experience with this oil? I have never heard of any issues, so I am curious to get your take on this.
