I am going to attempt to replace my sunroof headliner, which has an annoying tear in it at present.
Porsche sells two parts, "sunroof headliner" ($250 from Sunset) and "sunroof headliner with panel" ($650).
Obviously, not cheap, but I am afraid to even use my sunroof now as I don't want to rip it further.
Has anyone done this? Is the $250 part just the fabric that must be stretched and glued to the old panel? The PET for the 964 doesn't work on the Porsche site so can't figure out what I would be getting exactly.
Also, what other parts should I replace while I'm in there, in addition to the seal?
Man, this looks like one of those finicky, "clear-as-mud" assemblies, that is, til you dig into in & get your hands dirty.
Or, until some fellow Rennie pipes in with experience:
From what I remember the roof lining is held on the the sunroof panel by several spring clips (part 42 in Lonnie's diagram above). It just unclips with a little bit of clever manoeuvring.
To replace the seal (in 2 parts) you have to remove the whole panel which involves disconnecting the drive wires. The front seal is attached to the main roof section and the rear seal is attached to the back edge of the sunroof panel.
I tried to get mine out to reglue my sunroof upholstery and gave up. I unclipped it and got it loose but couldn't get it out the hole and was afraid of damaging the headliner. I ended up using 3M tape to redo it without removing it. It's working for now.
I have a simular issue, my sunroof doesn't have a tear or hole, but has come unglued from the front (windshield) side of the sunroof and I was also wondering how to re-glue/attach it correctly.
Good Luck and Happy Holidays,

My Sunroof headliner arrived in the post. Has anyone managed this? having read the Pelican article I'm figuring the sunroof headliner clips on the front only an slides out via the zipped section.

The $250 liner is probably just the fabric.
The $650 with panel is probably with the metal panel. Not the roof panel but the metal panel inside that the liner is actually glued to.
You will need to remove the sunroof to get at that panel.
There are a total of three seals need to reseal the sunroof, and some black snot. 3M weatherstrip adhesive for the seals.
Proably spray on contact cement for the liner.
Other parts that might need replaced with doing the sunroof are the plastic hinges and the air deflector hinges. Then sometimes break. particularly the deflector hinges, which also sometimes break putting the new ones in. I always like to have a couple spares around when doing a sunroof and they are not terribly expensive. It will make it a lot easier to do the front seal with the deflector removed, and you will like just make a mess of things if you try and glue that seal on with the deflector in place. The other thing is you will probably want to get the white guides which are likely worn out .

96456420100XXX is the fabric.
Makes perfect sense to me, but I was look at micro fishe when I started.

Yes, I've done it. I replaced both my sunroof cables and the headliner vinyl. The sunroof headliner slides out the sunroof opening, not the zipped section. The zipper section is only used to access the sunroof motor.
To remove the sunroof headliner panel, slide the sunroof back a few inches, then pull down the headliner panel. While pulling down on the front of the panel, pull the panel forward and you can pull it forwarded and out. You have to bow the panel to get it out. Don't worry, it won't crease but try to bow as little as possible. Once you have it removed, you can remove the bolts that attach the sunroof to the cables. The pictures in the Pelican article are helpful.
First time removing the sunroof headliner panel.
My vinyl headliner has detached from the panel. I have separated the metal panel from the springs holding it to the sunroof but I can’t seem to get the panel removed to reattach the headliner. Any tips are appreciated.
See Rocket Rob's entry a couple posts above. I used an interior pry tool (the plastic/nylon ones) with a 90 degree bend to pull down the leading edge. It's attached with spring clips, so a little tug pops them free. Then you bend/bow the metal panel inward until it clears the side channels it slides in and drops out. It's pretty simple and easy.
Hope this helps.
