Default Shifter guide tube bushings

Hi all,

For a couple of weeks now the shift effort on my car has steadily increased and felt very notchy. Today I disassembled the shift mechanism and found that the plastic bushings in the guide tube cup and angular joint ball cup (parts 15, and 16 in the PET) had broken down and perished. The shifter end of the guide tube was only being held against the shifter ball end by the rubber boot.

I have done an exhaustive search to try and find the bushings but can only find the two parts 15 and 16 complete with bushings for over US$200 when it's just the bushings that are shot. Has anyone found the bushings available by themselves or am I up for the entire assembly?

Thanks,

Neil

I found the answer on the 993 board... the part number for the bushing is 928-116-145-03-M100 and is listed as a 928 Clutch lever ball cup bushing. Around US$22 ea.

Neil, why don't you drill those ball-joints and put 2 monoballs instead? Cheaper and more effective...! It will become an RS-like rod.

I recentl had this same problem... the angular joint perished while I was 400 miles from home; zip tied it back together in order to return home. Bought the angular joint (part #16) for about $83. Replaced it during a DE tech day and then the rear bushing failed as I was replacing the angular joint. Zip tied it to get me home again, ordered part #15 ($112) and replaced it. All is now well.

I would highly recommend that this become required maintenance (replacing of these bushings, whether just the bushings or the entire parts) on 964s (all of them around 15-19 years old now). It's just a matter of time before the originals fail and they're guaranteed to fail at the most inopportune time. Antonio's suggestion to replace with monoballs is a good one.

It's possible that I could replace the shift rod end with a monoball but unfortunately the angular joint in a C4 mounts directly onto a ball welded onto the central torque tube cover rather than the small plate with tw0 bolts arrangement on a C2.

I'll replace the bushing cups now and make sure it goes on the regualr maintenance spreadsheet.

Cut the ball off, drill an 8 mm hole and screw a nice 8 mm inox bolt in place, then attach the monoball to it. I would try... hate those ball-joints!

I had the same problem 3 months ago. My car is a 1994 and I had the front and rear bushings replaced. I think my mechanic ordered the entire #15 and #16 part. I had a RS short shifter put in while he was at it.

Wow Andreas, that looks amazing! The "proper" permanent solution.

At this point I've replaced the bushings but have made a date with my mechanic to replace the cup and ball with spherical joints. He'll have to cut the ball off the driveshaft cover and weld on the stud, but the rest of it sohuld be straight forward.

Thanks guys...

Neil

Do I need 2 bushings or just one?

Thank you. The shifting is supremely smooth and slop-free.
