How to Remove Rear Bumper Face

Let's assume you have a bone-stock 964 still having those 5 bumper rivets:
1) If you were of a mind to leave them in place, does someone know of a DIY "rivets stay in place" bumper removal thread?
or,
2) You drilled out the 5 rivets' heads for bumper removal. Is there a noticable sloppiness to the bumper upon its "no rivet" reassembly? (Or, any other downside?)

to 2. : there is no problem to drill them out if you drill slow and keep it cool .
... and no problem replacing the rivets . Tey are standart - available in every carshop with the necessary tool.

Guys!, Great thread and thanks to google it's the first hit for "remove rear bumper 964". I am in the middle of trying to remove the rear bumper for a respray and this was great info. I started working thru the PET and got to the no 8 and I cant remove these bolts. So i am taking a detour to drill out the rivets.

I always remove my rear bumper with no issues and have never drilled out any of the factory rivets. I see no need to ever drill them out unless you want to get the bumper cover off of the alloy carrier beam. Save your self some time and just leave them intact. Rear bumper removal should take about 15 minutes requiring no power tools or drill bits.

Yes, those will let the sides of the bumper fall free of the fender. I would take those off first then brace the bumper with your knees or something and remove the two large bolts. The bumper is rather heavy too.

I removed the rear bumper on my '91 this evening and my car does not have the fasteners inside the taillights buckets.
The only fasteners I had to remove were the bolts at the bottom of the tubular mounts on the side pieces (2 per side), the bolts at the top of the side pieces (3 per side), and the bolts on the bottom of the center section that fasten it to the heat shield I think (5 or 6 bolts). There were no other fasteners. After removing these fasteners, it was a matter of pulling off the bumper. It appeared that the top of the center section is only pushed into place.
I see the metal piece attached to the top of the center section, but it did not have to be removed/drilled out, it just came along w/ the bumper when I removed the bumper.
The impact beam is still on the car. I only removed the bumper cover.

I have a question regarding seals.
I see the seal #29 on the car and in the parts lists however my car also had some type of foam or rubber seal that looked like it was stuck to the top edge of the bumper sides with adhesive, right where the bumper meets against the taillights. I don't see this piece in any of the parts diagrams.

The only reason to remove the rivits is to get the reinforcements off. You do not need to remove the rivits to get the bumper off the car.
I currently have mine all apart if you have any questions about the rear bumper I would be happy to answer them.

Got to remove mine to change the centre section to an RS one and also the corner piece for a dual exhaust pipe. So I take it I will have to drill the rivots - is this right?

Only if you need to transfer the reinforcements. If you have new parts yes, because they typically don't come with the reinforments, which is part 32, 38 and 39.

I drilled out the rivets on mine so I could replace the "shocks" (#7 above) and just replaced the rivets with ss screws and speed nuts so it is easy to take apart again.
