I drove my wife's BMW e36 yesterday... and was surprised how squeaky/rattly/loose the body felt. My 964 is 5 years older, but feels twice as solid. Interesting.

One thing I don't like about the 964 is the engine as it revs and also the looks I get and the thumbs up.
That can really be annoying plus I find myself just driving to drive.

I have owned my 964 for 5 yrs now and have thought about trading it for a newer 996 or 997 Turbo a couple of times. Just can't pull the trigger.

The sound and feel of the air cooled 964 without a lot of electronic nannies is priceless.

The only problem is that my driving season is short and I don't get to put enough kms on her.

This summer I only filled the tank twice and she only has 45,000kms.

I sold my '04 WRX in the spring, so I used the 964 as my daily (only) car this summer. Put 14k km on it, now at 250k km total. I test drove a bunch of cars, thinking of going back to one vehicle, and none of them entertained me as much as this 20 year old (in December) Porsche. Old school, windows down, sunroof open - like a time machine. There really is something unique about these cars.

So I bought another WRX for the winters.

I've often thought about going Italian but each time I drive the 964, that rekindles my fondness for it and have to try and justify adding to the stable vs replacing the classic.

Just a note, I am not giving up my 928. I purchased it for 4000.00, put new seats and rims, TB and WP, cat delete and best of all, only into that car for a grand total of 7000.00. The 944 is my toy. I use it a few times a week, hate shifting, lazy I guess. The big difference between the 928 and 944 is the comfort level. The 928 is great for travel, bigger, more options and much more comfortable with rear room for stuff.

I always liked the 911 type vehicles, and will most likely add one to my collection. The big draw back between the 911 and 928 is price. As an accountant, I am the cheapest guy you will ever meet. I hate to spend when I can deviate to someting else. I purchased the 944 because I paid next to nothing for it as far as I was concerned. So I look for, bang for the buck. Therefore, the 911 I purchase will most likely be the least costly with the most I can get. I am going to sell my 944. Hey it is very rare, Nile Green 944 is great shape. How many very dark stock green 944's have you seen.

So the looking begins. Keep your eyes out for me and remember, cheap is good.

You'll end up spending 25K on your 964, one way or another.

I might be just as cheap as you are, but buying a low cost 964 could be an expensive venture. OTOH price is not necessarily an indication mechanical fitness either. Mechanical condition should be the primary requirement while shopping for a 964 and then after that think about the dollars.

The total cost of ownership of a 928 vs. 911 are not miles apart. The 911 may cost more to purchace upfront, but you see that return if you sell the car. Also I suspect the 911 will see less depreciation.

Over the term of ownership, 964 is an exceptionally economical car.

'89 trans bell housing different size, read "$1,300 clutch kit instead of $300!" Speed sensor on flywheel also different, but not as big an item. No air bag, no OBD in gauges..........

Not all of them converted to head gaskets yet. Currently rebuilding mine, again, and it has not leaked at heads after any of the rebuilds. Not converting this time either.

After 3 mid '70s 2WD 911's, I LOVE to drive this 4WD car and can't wait to get it back on the road. All parts are lined up on the counter and ready to start going together Saturday!!!!

OFF TOPIC

I have a secret treatment for the non gasketed heads when rebuilding, if anyone's interested. Something I'm sure PCNA would not recommend.

One step above gum and spit, but it works. And I am doing it - this weekend as my engine goes back together.
