Any ideas why a clutch would have a metallic grating noise when depressed?

I've had a situation where my clutch was not fully disengaging and tried to adjust the clutch pedal travel; as it measured a bit short according to the Shop Manuals.

I subsequently discovered that I was getting a clatter as the clutch was sometimes depressed *too* far and allowed the fork to engage the "fingered" disc.

Is your grating noise only when the pedal is fully depressed?

Does it go away if you lift up a bit?

Do you feel any pulsations in the pedal? When I "over adjusted" my pedal travel like Dave describes, I felt a pulsation. I'm wondering if it might be your clutch throughout bearing.

When the clutch is depressed and making the noise, if you blip the throttle, does the pitch or frequency of the noise change or does it stay constant?

Has this noise been progressively getting louder or was this a sudden change? Has there been any recent changes or work done to the car?

When you let up on the pedal ,
does the noise go away before the clutch starts to grab
or after the clutch starts to grab ?

When its hot and making the noise ,
if you step lightly on the petal ,
not so much as to actuate the clutch ,
just enough so that the TO bearing is pressing and spinning
do you hear a bad bearing ?

Yes, you would need to separate the tranny from the engine to service the clutch fork and/or throwout bearing.
