Default Steve Wong Chip?

If you have one fitted whats better/worse?

Do you get a completely smooth idle at 850 rpm and more progressive power under
4000 rpm?

Or is it a bag of knackers?

I have the SW chip in my car, with cat bypass and cup pipe (primary bypass) and LWF, the idle is rock steady, and it pulls like a train, I would highly recommend it, the difference is very noticeable.

"Or is it a bag of knackers?"

Interesting comment! It usually depends upon who you ask, e.g. the lemmings,
or those that have done more than the "butt dyno" test, i.e. a thorough
Rennlist search will gain much insight, as many members have learned the true
reality this mod.

Ian,
I just created a post on this yesterday... based on my experiences of having just installed a Wong chip.
https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...ferrerid=19642

Installed the chip, started the car... rock solid idle (just like before). Much better throttle response and power below 4000 RPM. Which is exactly what I was looking for. I only have butt-dyno impressions, but I'm driving the car differently now because the power and response is different. I drive the car a lot, the chip has definitely made a positive change to the feel of the car.
Best,
Udo

I had a difficult motor to tune (3.8 conversion w/race cams, headers and race exhaust) with some mechanical issues unresolved after the rebuild. Steve has helped to identify and resolve these issues and provide mapping that has made the car from undriveable to a joy to drive. The only thing that remains is to get a more consistent idle but given the lumpy cams and lightened crankshaft that may be the trade off.

He has a lot of experience with our cars and a very good bed-side manor. He and Steve Weiner are the two go-to Motronic guys IMO.

I have the Steve Wong chip and think it does what it says.
My engine has a cut open airbox w. K&N filter, cup pipe, cat and runs on 95RON fuel. Steve has a suitable chip for this and other configurations as well.
My impressions are very positive. The idle is steady also with A/C on. Throttle response and engine torque just off idle is greatly improved. This makes for much easier take off's especially when uphill. Smoother running and better throttle response at lower and intermediate rpm's as well.
The chip has transformed the engine tractability in a very positive way.
Can not confirm the WOT power increase as it has not been on a dyno, but a 10 to 15 hp increase seems entirely possible as the Euro RS had 260 hp coming from an ecu reprogramming and a cup pipe.
Steve was helpful and provided good advice on what chip to use and also has quick delivery as he sends via airmail to Europe.
All in all I am very pleased with Steve Wong and his services.

You really need AC in Sweden?

Just joshing. Thanks for another positive review of the SW chip. I'm headed there within 2-3 months.

I have had my car now for three months and added the chip as my first mod, then Cat bypass and G-pipe and for the $ invested, very worthwhile. Idling is fine and the apparent turbo lag is less evident.

"Much better throttle response and power below 4000 RPM."

Checked for sub-audible pinging lately and the extent of long term piston ring
damage? Or whether "power below 4000" has compromised overall power
during heavy engine loads and/or very hot summer driving? Or how much
octane booster or aviation fuel is necessay and is the trunk kept well stocked
with that for gas fill-ups?

Bottom line: Or maybe the Porsche engineers should have consulted with
the "tuners" during the 964 engine development, right?

92silver964,
no I havent had much use for the A/C, it's been one of the rainiest summers in 50 years here. Our son is visiting us now, he lives in Oregon and he says he feels like he never left the US.
Since you are posting on this thread I suppose you are interested in improving your P-car. Have you considered a respray ?. Silver is so slow.

Bottom line: If Porsche could go back and optimize the mapping for 93 octane and various exhaust bypasses... they would probably end up with a result similar to the Wong chip. Porsche had to worry about Swiss Drive-by noise laws and what kind of gas I'd buy in Iowa one weekend and California the next weekend. Plus they wrote the code 20+ years ago.

My focus is much narrower. Thanks for the heads up though... I'll start listen for sub-audible pingning.

Sorry... I'm not saying anything new here.
