Portland Engine Drop
I bought a car that needs a new clutch and some other repairs; it otherwise seems to be a sound car. I put it up on Craigslist with the possibility of flipping it as is and putting the money towards another 964...but the car is really starting to grow on me!
I got some quotes from the local shops in town and all of them were as you would expect, not cheap. I like the idea of doing he work myself and getting at all the little "while you are in there" things, as well as cleaning everything up.
In the interest of covering all my bases, does anyone know of an good cheaper independent shop, or someone who would come help me for a fee. This may be an interesting option between doing it "myself" and paying the piper.
I'm in Portland OR and will take any words of encouragement or advice before I start the job. Dan J ha already graciously offered to help with the actual drop when I get all the odds and ends disconnected.
Here is the Craigs ad.

you should probably plan on hanging onto the car and doing the repairs, use it and sell in the future when the market gets better.
i'll be in portland july 24th and can help you with the sunroof...i just completely disassembled mine, relubed it and put back together.
what is the problem with your sunroof??...also what type of repaint was done?...quality parts off job that was colorsanded or inexpensive mostly taped job?
I like the idea of pulling the engine and doing it at home, and appreciate the offers to help out! I agree that hanging on to the car and sorting out the repairs is most likely the best way to go. The paint is unknown although it looks quite nice and there are no real obvious signs of a respray, you have to look very closely. Sunroof turned out to be the plastic parts on the wind deflector. I just pulled the deflector off for the time being and saw the parts are pretty cheap on Pelican.
jimq, the price on the ad is my asking price, not the price I bought it for, so break even would be relative.
At any rate, I am starting to really like the car and leaning towards keeping it...so possible engine drop party at my house coming soon.
Any suggestions on where to buy the parts? I know Sunset Porsche is in my back yard, but maybe there is a better spot? Pelican?
autohauz az is another source for well priced porsche parts...they have a sachs clutch kit for $600:

i saw a lightly used clutch and flywheel on pelican parts used parts forum for $250 but i tried scrolling the ads and couldn't find it.

I like using Halsey Imports for a lot of parts. They are kind of VW/Audi oriented, but their prices are competitive and they usually can get just about anything OEM same or next day...plus they are about 10 blocks from home. Pelican is great as well, although you have to wait for shipping. Sunset can have really great prices on certain things (like those 928 GTS calipers that every 964 needs, and certain rotors) and for other things it's amazing how high the prices are. EBS Racing is also a great resource and you might look at the clutch components there.
Steve Weiner...he's a terrific (and local) resource for parts and advice. I just picked up a case of oil from him last night. He might be able to help evaluate and source your clutch options as well.

I too love Halsey imports, I have used them many times and once found my ISV to be much cheaper (like $100) than the lowest price I could find on the internet when I relaced it in my old Targa.
Good news this morning...
My car appeared to have multiple leaks and one major leak where the tranny meets the engine, and I wanted to know what they were before I invested any more money in the car. After a couple of trips to the local powerwash and a couple of wipedowns, I decided that the leak might be the oil sender o-ring. I got in there and with the help of this site and its excellent DIY write up and was able to replace it in a couple of hours.
Then I used citrus degreaser and gave it one last cleaning after the o-ring replacement... and this morning...not a drop of oil under the car!
I still think that maybe a cam cover or valve cover may be have a bit of weeping, but so far so good!
BTW. I had to take out the manifold to get to the sender and could not imagine doing it by just pulling the air filter, very tight space.
So now that that is fixed, I am much more comfortable in moving forward with the next steps, clutch and suspension.
