Default Confused about engine mounts

I am thinking on changing the engine mounts in my 1993 C2 with 97000 miles but after reading the post about putting 993 mounts in a 964 I´m confused....

Should I buy 964 RS mounts?

Or 993 mounts? Or standard 964 mounts?

I am tempted by the RS mounts since they are a little bit cheaper....

Henry, if I recall correctly, the 964 and 993 mounts are oil filled and will interchange with maybe a bolt length difference. The RS mounts are solid rubber, no fluid, but will fit. Consider a support brace with the RS mounts, but some say it is not necessary. Depands how hard you run it....

I read the thread as well and had a look at my mounts (1993, 120kmiles), no surprise they looked like the others in the pictures posted.

For me its the RS or the Wevo mounts. Probably I will go for the Wevos, just because I prefer the way they look. On top of that they are lighter and only slightly more expensive.
Is there a supplier for the Wevos in UK?

Maybe we should try to do a group buy and get some rebate. By the sound of things there might be a couple guys needing new mounts.

I fitted standard 964 mounts to mine because something was niggling in the back of my mind that, since the left and right mounts had different part numbers, there must be a good reason why Porsche chose to have different spec mounts for left and right. Essentially, I decided it was the safe option. However, the RS mounts are the same both sides and since there is very little difference between an RS motor and a normal 964 motor, the argument for having different mounts on each side holds no water IMO. Therefore using the same argument, 993 mounts (which are the same on both sides) should also be OK and the evidence from those that have fitted them so far appears to confirm this.

I contacted Porsche to get their own take on the use of 993 mounts instead of 964 mounts but didn't get a reply. In retrospect, I should have gone for the 993 mounts and saved a lot of cash.

The Wevo mounts allow more noise into the cabin. I didn't like that and threw them out. I replaced them with Boxster transmission mounts which are a 993 engine mount.

When you say "threw them out" do you mean you still have them and would like to sell them ??

I'm going for the 993 mounts as I would like NVH supression which the RS (and from what I have read in previous posts) and WEVO mounts.

I drive predominantly on the street and will not have significant track workouts.

Boxsey, I read somewhere that the RS mounts can be the same number because they are solid rubber. The left and right hydraulic (original) mounts are different because when under hard acceleration, one mount is pushed up while the other is pulled down due to engine torque. (compression vs. tension) Each one is designed to resist the force in a different direction. Cannot verify this, but it makes sense. I know my left one only leaked after I lifted the car by the engine case for the first time. It may not have been designed to take the upward (compression) force. I am going to RS mounts with a braced support.

Fred, a little off topic but since installing my new mounts I haven't lifted my car by the engine case for fear of damaging the mounts. Have you come across another way of getting the rear on jack stands without lifting under the case?

Steve,

I've been toiling with the same dilemma. I've had a set of flat tops fabricated for my jack stands so thats a start. I think the only other way would be lift bars like the 928 guys use. I'm going to see if I can get something similar made for our cars. I think the website is liftbars.com

Cheers,

Cliff

I had some lift bars fabricated about a year ago and am very happy with them.

I'm working on a modification and then may make some available. I still owe picks and details. will try to get something done next weekend.

Cheers

At the moment I'm thinking the simplest way is to get another floor jack and resting jack stands under the trailing arms for safety (not using them to take the load). As I have no garage my car is rarely up in the air for more than a few hours.

Boxsey, I raise with a floor jack on the jack points, use another floor jack on the trailing arms while I replace the first jack with jackstands. Most of the time I raise at the jack points and put a ramp under the tire. Of course that doesn't work if I intend to remove the wheel.

Boxey,

When I had my GT3, I used a pair of 2 x 4"s screwed together on the flat sides and placed them behind the wheels and backed over them thus raising the car to a suitable level that I could get a jack under the appropriate jacking points. Does that make any sense?
