Default Engine Mounts

How can you tell if they are worn out??

I changed mine out for some second hand units (poor month and the USD/GBP rate is terrible still) and they hang down about the same. In the old units i could put my finger in between the gap, i can do the same on the replacement parts.

None of the units have a sloshing sound when i shake them.

I might try some more tightening of the bottom nut but i have a nagging doubt they arent right.....

There is a good thread that discussed this. See https://rennlist.com/forums/964-foru...ne-mounts.html

The original engine mounts tend to last around 100k. You will notice when they begin to sag by looking at your exhaust pipe. The pipe will have dropped a good 1 1/2 to 2 inches from the body panel above. Worst case scenrio is fluid leaking out of the mount. A worn mount will still have fluid in it if you shake it. You can replace the mount with a Wevo, 986, 993, or 964. You should be able to find a decent lower mileage used mounts for 993, 964 or 986 for under $100 either on ebay or Rennlist. The Wevos or RS mounts will obviously be a little bit more expensive.

Stock 993 mounts vs. the RS mounts: worth the extra effort for RS's? (ie, $-spent procuring the extra fiddling RS bolts, washers, etc)...

...or do the 993 units give you 95% of the RS's value?

(If the latter, I'm ready to pull the trigger on 993's.)

I've come across one 964 fitted with 993 mounts. The owner (Bobster on here) is not convinced yet if he's done the right thing as he's noticed a lot more resonance in the cabin. When I looked at them in situ in his car, the engine carrier looked like it was sitting higher up than mine which is on new 964 mounts.

I just had 993 mounts installed with low mileage on them and I have been really happy with them. Vibration is down, shifting is tighter and for the money it was not a bad upgrade.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Rob - i did read that thread and came out more confused than ever!

The local OPC has mounts at £180/190 each so quite a lot of money.

I thought about the Wevo mounts but dont want to have to strengthen the bracket, etc...

If i see some 993 mounts i might try them...

Following on from Steves comments above on my car. I've been looking at other engine heights since changing to the 993 mounts and don't believe it is any higher than good/new standard mounts. They lifted my engine by about 10mm from where it sat with the old ones, but I think it's where it should be now.

Regarding resonance, I don't think there is more now. I think I was trying to find differences, before and after, and thought I noticed a rattle in the passenger door area which seems to have gone away now.
On reflection I think it was a good move, but I guess time will tell.

993 mounts are fluid filled as well.

I replaced mine this winter with a new set of RS mounts from Sunset Porsche. The mounts are $140 each, plus some hardware. My original, 50,000 mile, 993 mounts are currently on their way to France.

Chrysler Pacifica mounts have had so many problems that there was at one time a huge wait to get new ones. The best alternative was to drill a hole in the old ones and fill them with super caulk. I wouldn't do it, but I suppose you could do this with your broken mounts if you wanted to see what RS mounts feel like.

Glad to hear that since chatting to you about them at the beginning of the month you're more comfortable with them now Bob. And combined with Streetfighter's positive comments about 993 mounts there's plenty of food for thought for anyone considering changing their worn out original mounts.

Maybe the reason I never received a reply to my letter to Porsche AG asking if it was OK to use 993 mounts, was because they've still got plenty of 964 mounts to shift out of stock first?

You know I have seen some 993's with 964 mounts in them. I would agree with you that Porsche maybe trying to get rid of there 964 mounts! I would recommend installing 993 mounts if your still looking.
