Default Steering rack problems

My 964 has just failed its MOT due to a supposed problem with the hydraulics in the steering rack. The garage is quoting £1,500 to do their own reconditioning of the steering rack. I have spoken to another garage and they think it sounds very expensive and possibly unnecessary. I am told the problem is to do with perishing rubber gaskets giving a slight risk that the steering rack could seize up. Does this sound at all likely?

The manufacture date is 1992 which should mean it contains the then new rotary valve type steering rack, replacing the older piston type.

that is more expensive than an exchange rack from Porsche!

You can buy the correct gasket kit from the ZF distributor (they build the racks for Porsche) in your country for less than 80 €. Just call them and give them the ZF part number on your rack, and then find antoher garage to do the work!
