Default Fanbelt sensor on the blink? !

It usually comes on under acceleration and braking, then goes off for a while. I checked the small sensor that is in contact with the belt and this appears to be working fine both when the warning light is on or off.

I’ve noticed no change in performance. Should I have it seen to or keeping going until it’s next service due in a couple of months. Am I going any damage to anything??

You can drive the car without the sensor but you are taking a chance of damaging the engine if the belt breaks. If that happens, you won't know and the engine will quickly overheat. My advice is get the sensor fixed as soon as you can.

About 10 years ago, I had my sensor go bad on a 3 day trip. All of a sudden the fan light came on the dash, I stopped, confirmed my fan belt was ok and then continued the rest of my trip. I had the sensor repaired when I returned home.

The little "roller" inside is probably worn out, so when the load on the belt changes the light goes on.

Hi Tony

Check out my thread here.

It should explain the problem and suggests a solution.

I had the little roller sieze during a race and it destroyed itself meaning it left only the bracket holding the wheel....a lap later, the metal bracket destroyed the belt. Even with a loud exhaust, windows down and a helmet on, you can hear the audible warning bell. Needless to say, I came in early and ended the race in order to save the engine.
