964 VS Boxster S
Hey guys,
I'm bit of a Porsche newbie, but reading so much in the past weeks about the 964. I've been in the market for a 964 for about a month. Test drove a few high mileage examples. They drove excellent but needed some work, and i just thought it be better to keep looking for car that wasnt going to need anything.
I went to test drive a excellent 2001 Boxster S with 60k miles today and was very happy with they way it drove and handled. The owner would let it go for $15k. I really love the aircooled 911s but this Black on black was a very sweet car.
I know the drive is completely different from the 964 feel, comparing apples to oranges in a sense, but was curious as to what you 964 guys think of the Boxster S as a DD. As far as maintenance costs i'm assuming the 964 would be a more expensive car to drive over time, but prices on the boxsters are still depreciating whereas the 964 is at the end of the depreciation curve.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

had a Boxster. Nice DD, and a great AX and track car. Easy to drive fast.
Does it compare to a nice 964? No. I love my 964. Was looking for a 964 when I bought the Boxster for some of the same reasons you stated. Drove it for 5 years, hard. Had Zero issues, but just didn't have the soul I was looking for. I have owned to Carreras in the past, an '84 and and '87. But my C2 is by far my favorite of my Carreras and has the soul of a Porsche I was looking for again...
The S is a wonderful car....don't listen to the chick car stuff... in stock form the S will show its tail lights to the 964 at AXs. As a daily driver it is a bit more sedate...
the 964 is a Porsche. The Boxster is a modern Porsche.
The Boxsters (M96 motors) have some major issues....(self destruction)
having driven both......owned both.......I currently drive a 964 for a reason....

Our current '98 base model Boxster was our first Porsche, I think it's a great handleing car. For us it was a good way to get our feet wet in the Porsche world. We have purchased a '91 964 but as of this moment haven't recieved it yet. Best of both worlds I think!

there was a similiar thread a few days ago comparing ownership of a cayman vs a 964:
https://rennlist.com/forums/964-foru...-or-964-a.html
You will find all the same arguments.
I expect if you buy the boxster you will really enjoy it however if down the road you own a 964 you will regret not having done it earlier. I wouldn't trade for a brand new boxster or cayman. I WOULD trade for a new 911 however .........yup, I'd sell it and buy a couple of 964's!

As my good German friend Carsten once told me..."a Boxster is for your secretary with whom you are banging. Ja you must drive Nine One One Porsche if you are real man".
(Of course his best quote occurred one day driving from Basel to Wiesbaden on the autobahn. One of those SL560 Mercedes was poking along in the left lane. After much light flashing the Benz pulled over. Cartsen remarked..."that car, that car is like Corvette in America. Man who drives that car must pay for the sex...")

have to agree with that....
obviously a good many of you have never driven a Boxster or even ridden in one being driven well.
the mid engine technology really is advanced beyond the 911. After all Number one was mid engined now wasn't it?
not too many rear engined F1 or Indy cars, are there?
I love my 911, but the Boxster is a nice car, just not a 911.

Boxsters are great as daily drivers but don't expect a 2001 car to cost less to run than a 964. The routine servicing costs might be cheaper on the boxster however there are lots of things that will need replacing at that age e.g. coil packs, MAF, air-oil separator, drop links, suspension bushes, rear plastic window, window regulators and more. I speak from experience
