I happened to stop into the local dealer Saturday. He was pitching his remaining '08 Caymans. I can get into a nicely optioned service loaner with < 5k miles for around $40k. Full warranty etc. If I went that route I would have to let my '92 C2 w/ 55k mi. go. Can't keep two and would need to keep my '04 Cooper S for daily driver. Would anyone here consider a Cayman over the 964? I am leaning towards keeoing the 964 but thought I would post here and get your opinions.
Don't ask... go drive both back to back, and I don't mean a 10 minute ride... drive the Cayman for at least an hour... then decide.
Can't go wrong either way. It is just that the driving experience is soooo much different. The old school of the 964 with its simplistic interior, engine noise, etc. vs the new feel of a mid engine car with all the electronic goodies.
Keep in mind that the new Cayman is out... new engine, new styling changes (minor but still a few)... the old one will take a significant drop in value.
The only thing I can say, if you go the Cayman route... it must be a Cayman S. I had both as loaners when I took the 996TT for service... difference is night and day. Must have the additional hp/tq from the S... imho of course.
I would hang onto the 964 until the '09s hit the used market. The '09 Cayman S has around 320 hp and they now offer LSD as an option. I am considering one myself.
I kind of own both (boxster, non S). It's not a 100% comparison to the Cayman due to lower h.p. and such, but the 964 is my BABY. I love the boxster, the handling is better stock, the HVAC works excellent and so forth.
The 964 is PURE PORSCHE =). It's just not the same. You have to drive the car, the drivers seat is cockeyed, it smells like a car and all that other stuff. Then there is that 3.6 in the *** end.
Just close the doors and you know something is different.
You really can't compare the 2 I guess. They are pretty much different cars all together. I agree about driving one for a while and then decide.
I guess to sum it all up, the 964 has soul. My Boxster does also, it's just more robotic.
Just take a quick glance at all the used Caymans around; no one is lining up to buy them. Sad, because it's a really nice car. Always reminds me of the stories I heard from the sales guys who were around trying to unload 914-6's.
I sold my RSA to buy a new '06 Cayman S three years ago. The CS is quicker, and easier to drive fast. Mid-engine handling is very nice. There seem to be some great deals on used ones and left-over '08s, but the new and significantly improved '09 arrives in March. Great deal or improved car; take your pick.
Classic shape, superb build quality, amazing sound, little depreciation, smells like a porsche, far fewer on the road, rear seats, easy to work on...for me its a no brainer.
I'd quite like a cayman or a boxster, they are great cars to drive but its never going to be a 'replacement' for a 964.
