If I´m lucky there will be an used Cayman S in my distant future, but today the price of an used Cayman here is two times (and more) of the price I could get for the 964.
Maybe I will keep the 964 forever, don´t know... but I really like the Cayman S lines and features

The deals were on regular caymans, they have S models also but more $$s. They are selling the left over '08 models at a discount in anticipation of the new '09s. i was not really planing on a car purchase, but I had to go to the Audi dealer nest door and just dropped in to look around at the Porsche dealer.
The 964 is Porsche #6 for me; '83 944, '75 914, '73 914, '83 911, '99 Boxster and now the '92 C2. I was sorry I sold the SC, and wanted another air-cooled 911, After searching for a while I found the '92. Slate gray metalic 5 sp. w/ black leather int., 55k miles, not perfect but a very nice car. Stock except stereo and Fabspeed catback. I know, I need to post pics...
I doubt seriously that I will move away from the 964. It just makes too much sense financially to keep it. Plus, I really, really like the 964, but I had to at least consider the Cayman.
Thanks for the advice.

I was just at West Houston Porsche over lunch to pick up an o-ring for the oil pressure sender (for $8.50 - WTF? ...but on the way to lunch and cheaper than buying from Pelican plus shipping...).
Anyway, that lot was flooded with new Caymans. I think there were at least 15...this against 5 total new 911s (Turbo, GT3, Cab, Coupes) and an equal number of new Boxsters and new Cayennes.
So, looking like the Cayman is a bit of an unloved car...

Cayman S for the win after the 09's are out. I also had a S for a loaner and it drove very nice and had some kick butt power. There is a white one I see most days on the way to work and it looks really hot

For me its all about design. The 964 will alway looks like the iconic Porsche and the Caymans, boxsters, cayenne, etc.. are cars whose lines will become dated in a few years and you'll buy them cheap next to the orientals cause they all look kind of the same.. even today the 99 boxster looks already old.. (In my opinion).
About driving I'm pretty sure any of the new ones will outperform the 964 but its the feeling, smell, sound and all those things that none of the new ones will ever give back to the driver.
Drive that 964 until it dies.. then buy the "coxster"

The review of the new engine sounds promising... 320hp... Direct Injection... must be a sweet combination... true, not as wild as dropping a 3.8 in there...

I'd love to have a Caymen S. Wife would probably like it more because she seems to hates the 964 for some reason. It will be awhile before the Caymen gets into my price range. One day after the economy comes back the 964 and the Caymen S will be valued about the same.

If the new engine design proves robust, then...

becomes the new temptation.

I tried the "old" 2.7 cayman and more recently the new S with PDK. The old 2.7 has NO power it just makes a very nice noise under full throttle. The handling was nice but it felt so underpowered I got tired of it really quickly.
The new S is a good drive and a very good car but I still prefer the 964 by miles. I just feel too detatched from the actual driving experience in a cayman. It feels like a very efficient, fast modern day car (especially with pdk) but who really cares about going faster when you're less involved - otherwise we'd all be driving GTR's.
