Cayman or 964?
#32
I personally would not compare a 964 to a Cayman at $40K. For $40K, the equivalent would be a 965/aka 964 Turbo or and HIGHLY modified 964. And in either case, I would take a 964 in a heartbeat.

Cayman to 964. 964 without a doubt. Cayman S or 964 now we have a decision to make. The cayman S is such an easy car to drive. It does not recognize your mistakes as where the 964 amplifies them. The caymen S is well behaved nicely balanced and does none of the things I love so much about my 911's. Capable yes fun to drive well IMO nothing to write home about. Unless a cayman S is pushed 10/10ths it lacks the feel and fun factor of the 964 not to mention the sound of the air cooled engine.
I think if I were to do club racing the Cayman S is an easy car to win races with. Although I will always cherish the 964 and can keep up with some very well setup cayman S's with highly modified suspensions and engine work. I have to push my 964 as hard as it will go in order to do what a CS does so naturally.
I don't race, don't plan on racing and will never trade my 964 C2 for a cayman S and wouldn't give a stock Cayman the time of day. As far as comparing a cayman S to a 965 there is no comparison the 965 will eat it up and spit it out.

In any case, once you take one Cayman S, add X, Y, and Z in modifications.....unless you're buying right now in a bottom market.........the guys who have been out there with these have $70-80-90(?)K tied up in one. At that price, I'll go mano-a-mano with them in a stock GT3.
Bottom line is that I've yet to have ANY Cayman S run equal with me in the RS America out here. And that's a nearly stock car. I'm not sure where Mooty got with his before he got disgusted with all the problems, but I don't remember him telling me it was orders of magnitudes quicker than what I can run on a stock car, save some shocks and springs and junky old RA1's.

I got the base boxster 2 years before the 964. It was the boxster that turned me to Porsche. I use it as an everyday driver and it is a real delight. Modern, extremely capable, great fun down twisty roads and is almost unflappable. A very different drive to the 964, especially the wonderful front end bite you get with a mid engined chassis, but still lots of feedback and still 100% Porsche IMO. When I'm at the lights guys in 'hot' cars want to race me when I'm in the boxster. When I'm in the 964 they just want to admire it and cruise along side.

You're kind of contradicting yourself here. First, the S's that you can hold our own with are "highly modified", then you say it's natural for an S. (But I think I know what you're saying, platform and development-wise.)

Got lost in a tangent I guess. must be spring fever and a dieing need for some track time.

Funny that this message is posted on a 964 page. What kind of response were you hoping for. Of course the majority of answers would be "keep the 964." I think you have made your decision, and were posting the question here, to reinforce your decision
Wonder what what happen if you post the same message on the Cayman Page???
I go with most other people - Keep the 964 - you seem to have a low mileage one that you love. I would hate to see you start your search for a 964 all over again. The Price of used Caymans will continue to drop..........don't rush into the decision.

Ahhh... THERE's the rub.
'Drop' as in, to drop like a 964?
Or, 'drop' as in, dropping like a 944?
(numbers sold, perceived repair worthiness, styling & design 'uniqueness', all will bear on that outcome...)
It would seem Boxster numbers are foretelling more of a '944'-eulogy for the 'gators, than one of a '964'.
...but I could be wrong.

It'll be cool when the first generation caymans (non-S) get cheap enough to create a spec cayman race class (similar to the spec boxster class that is all the rage right now). That would be a fun race car!

I don't think the camanS will ever hit current early BoxsterS lows but it will come close. The good news is they will make great track toys for very little $$ someday soon.
