Default Front Hood Shocks Recommendation

I need new front hood shocks, shocker. Is there a preferred brand? According to advertising Weltmeister last longer than the OEM Stabilus. Is this true?

If it were your car what would you purchase and from where? A broom handle to prop it open is not the correct answer.

Sorry about the spelling on the last title.

You can do a search here for more info, but the Weltmeister ones I bought from Performance would not fit...there was too much metal on the end and as a result I couldn't get the shock end to fit between the ball and the fender metal. Performance told me I had the correct part number and wouldn't take them back.

Don't know if I got a mislabeled set or what, but I went with the Stabilus (from Pelican) and they work fine. At half the price, I think the Stabilus is the way to go. So what if they need replacing after 7 years?

Make sure you get an extra end clip in case one of yours shoots off into the yard...

Thanks for the info. I saw your earlier thread and thought you may have been shipped the wrong part. Either way if Stabilus is easier to install, I am going that route.

I also recently bought the Stabilus brand from Pelican. Installation was much easier than the write-ups initially suggested.

I purchased from FVD brombacher, the prices were over half of the dealerships, and they guarantee better quality.

Hey,
Pelican is where I purchased mine. Great webite, for tech tips too! I had a heck of a time with the driver side strut,do to the small space where the lower part of the strut fits and the clip removal, I couldn't see down into the space. I since have gotten a mechanics telescoping mirror. I look forward to finishing the job.

The driver side IS harder but doable. Did your struts have a plastic cylinder piece that goes around the strut? That's the key to getting it done. You place the socket of the new strut on the ball, then press down the cylinder and it locks it into place.

I did mine when I first got the car 4 yrs ago, and it really wasn't too tough. a good strong 5 yr old's hands would work better though.

That is encouraging as a I have Frankenstein hands. Shocks are ordered regardless.

I got the cheaper ones($16.95 each) from Performance. They don't work in the winter. Guess I'll try the Stabilis next.

My Pelican shocks are still fine front and rear after two years. No problems in winter.

Installation is no problem if you follow the DIY help available here. Several times I have wished for telescoping arms and fingers, but a 964 is a pleasure to work on compared to most modern cars.

Theres a company that makes new hood and trunk props. Made of carbon, a lot lighter than shocks, look good and dont wear out. Ill look for the link but saw it on that flat black 935 project on this forum

The trunk prop costs around $40, a little more than hood shocks. You will need to drill the body to install it. It is also not recommended for steel hoods, since they are quite heavy.
