Default Oil change - price check

Hey folks,
It's winter and I don't feel like takling a cold oily mess. The local pro shop is saying around $200-250 for a synth change on the '91 C4. Yep, that was a bit surprising. Is that in line with what everyone is paying? Seems steep for 10qts of oil + filter and labor. I might look into the diy option on the next warm-ish weather day.

Cheers,
nick

Mobil1 and a stock filter. I know it's a pain, but wow. Unless they heard '01 C4 over the phone?

By pro shop do you mean Porsche specialist? If it is just an oil change, why not go a regular chain oil change place for a more reasonable price?

Is there a $2K Bosch oil filter wrench required to do it?

Would you trust a 15 year old 'chain oil change place' employee to change the life blood of your 911?

I wouldn't.

$62 for 11 quarts of Brad Penn. $8 for an oil filter. $1 for 2 crush washers.

I would not either, I would do it myself.

OTOH I am not convinced paying 2X more is assurance that the same 15 year old would not be doing the work. I bet the waiting room is much more spiffy though.

Only if you frequent dealer shops....

Finally managed to come across this -

https://rennlist.com/forums/964-foru...ost-in-us.html

Seems that $200 isn't completely out of line here in beantown. I'll pay a premium to have seasoned eyes give the car a once-over during the change - I'm still new to the nuances. I only want to make sure I'm not getting cooked on the price.

I saw a 3.2 after a general mechanic did an oil change. There was about a quart coating most of the engine bay afterward...

Thanks fellas!

Exactly. These aren't Buick's we're driving.

I paid $230 at the dealer last year to do the 996TT so sounds abot in line. Its way over priced but thats what you pay if you dont do your own.. I always do the 964 myself and now with the CPO done on the TT I will be doing it also.

I have asked just for fun at gypsy lube for them to do it at the advertised price .
They said go away we don't do those cars .

They will not even take the old oil for recycling .

Gypsy lube ,
can't live with them ,
can't live with them .

My first one three years ago was about $140, for which I got to watch a "seasoned Porsche pro" spill oil in my engine compartment and overfill it almost a quart.

After that, I did it myself like the rest of my vehicles. True, it ain't a Buick, but it ain't rocket science either.

What is an hour labor in your area? $110, or more? Add the full-tilt price of 11 qts. synthetic and a filter, and there ya go - easily over $200.

hehe
a "pro shop" always reminds me of where Herb Tarlek bought his suits.
He could be working at a dealership now, scheduling oil changes...
