Oil change - price check

Watched the oil being changed...
Recently watched my mechanic change the oil on my C4 and it was quite interesting. When the majority of the oil had been drained he punctured the oil filter in the engine compartment. He then opened the thermostat, tilted the rear of the car upward, and put a small compressed air nozzle onto the hole he had punctured in the oil filter. He blew the remainder of the oil out such that when he took off the oil filter there was not a drop in the engine compartment.

some of you guys are so cheap. who cares if it costs 200-250 dollars. why do you think YOU are the only ones who deserve to be well compensated for their efforts.
so what if they make good, quick money on oil changes. if they actually charged you for all the time they spent keeping your 15 year old car running correctly you would really cry poor.
if you can't do it yourself you have no business complaining about what you should be charged for it. you are the ****ing genius that figured out how to afford a porsche, right? either pay your bill with a smile or sell the car.

"and put a small compressed air nozzle onto the hole he had punctured in the oil filter."
I would not do that to my car .
If the air blows any of the crap held in the filter , out of the filter , the crap might just end up exactly where I don't want it . The oil is filtered as it comes out of the motor , iirc . If junk gets out of the filter and into the oil that might have to go into and out of the motor before it sees the filter again , I will be unhappy .
I no longer put a hole in the filter at all .

The first time I did mine, I placed a bunch of paper towels all around the filter, anticipating a big gush of oil. Hardly anything actually drooled out, pretty much a non-event. I see no real need to drain the filter, and I definitely would not blow air through there.
Yes, I expect to be "well compensated for my efforts", and everyone should be the same. But I have yet to encounter a shop I feel sorry for, as believe me, they have always "actually charged me for all the time they spent keeping my 15 year old car running correctly".
So, 911919: shop owner, mechanic, fleeced customer, or just got out on the wrong side of the bed?

$250 seems high. I live in Massachusetts, and have a PCA certified mechanic change my oil, and its around $150 for synthetic with filter. Depends on the price of oil, but specifically:
2/23/07: oil + filter $127.91
5/15/07: oil + filter: $183.07
10/16/07: oil + filter: $144.99
3/18/08: oil + filter: $122.90
9/5/08: oil + filter: $150.00

Paying someone to do it isn't neccessarily a bad think as long as you trust your shop to do it right.
I got bored last weekend, so I decided to change the oil myself on the new GT3. The drain plug slipped out of my hand, jammed the drain hole of my oil catch tank, and I got about 8 quarts of oil all over the floor.

no, i am not a mechanic. but i do have friends that are. here is a typical example of a cheap-*** porsche owner.
owner: hey, there is fault code on my car.
mechanic: no problem, i will hook it up to my scan tool and get rid of it for you.
owner: why did you charge me 1/2 labor just to hook up a computer to erase a fault code?
mechanic to himself: because you cheap bastard, that computer cost me $10,000.
now the mechanic thinks you are a total douche. good job.
tomorrow we will talk about porsche owners who don't want to pay for track support, but show up at the trailer asking for help. (but the crew and all their expenses are paid for by one racer).

i used to. sold it 2 years ago. i was riding my bike much more than driving the car.
pretty much the same way. i get dirty at work.
no, i am not a psycologist. but i have been told i am a good listener.
