Default Air Con repairs in South Australia

Hi All,

Are there any 'listers out there in South Australia ? A colleague and I who both have air cooled cars (964 and 911 Carrera) have been struggling to get anyone who can fix our cars air con. It seems as though our local porsche specialist mechanic who is awesome (not the dealer) can fix almost anything EXCEPT our air con !

We are wondering if there is anyone out there who has any experience with third party air con fixers who have actually managed to fix our problematic aircon and keep it fixed ! ?

Cheers,

Mark

G'day Mark. Sorry I cant help, I need to find someone similar here in ACT. The P dealer changed the vavles and re-gassed with the new gas, but it stopped blowing cold about 1 month later. The temp has hit 38 here today so the car stays in the garage

The dealer did say that the vanes inside the compressor sometimes break, but how would we know if this was the case? You can pick up a reconditioned compressor from the US from fleabay, dunno if that would help though...

Mark,
Maybe we should start a 'heatwave in Oz' thread so we can all find out where the best local knowledge lies in every state. I sweated today but you guys in the southern states have my sympathy given todays top temp.

ps....suggestions for Sydney A/C specialists also welcomed.

I cannot help you with a name in Australia since I am rather far away, but I do have something to say that I learned from experience.
I had lots of trouble getting the A/C to work properly in my older Porsche till I found a very good professional A/C specialist. He solved all my A/C problems for good.
If you can find a real pro in A/C repair your problems will be over (it´s the same as with everything else, the real good ones are hard to find)

Hope you get to find a real good one

Default Heatwave alright !

I've got a C4 Cab, and in Adelaide yesterday and the day before it was so hot that I couldn't touch the switch to put the roof down ! The inside temp in the car would have been about 60C I reckon ! The high yesterday was 46 degrees so it is a bit of a stinker....and my car is my daily driver....bugger !

It seems like there aren't that many of us in Oz with 964's so we should keep a bit of an Aussie thread going to try and help each other out....I'm also looking for somewhere like Pelican parts or similar in this part of the world to buy a window switch...if I get it from Pelican the postage is more than the cost of the switch ! Ouch.

The hunt for a decent aircon service place goes on then !

Cheers

I heard that the temperature early in the week in Adelaide was 45.6C.
I doubt that the A/C in the 964 will work in this temperature and the ealier model is even less inclined to work.
My 964 all gassed up, recently serviced and parked in the shade works up to about 31C and then if the temp is over that we drive the partners Subaru.
What I am saying is "do not expect too much" and if you want the A/C to really work go and buy a Toyota.

Its not unexpected that the aircon doesn't work that well about 30 odd degrees, and like you say, not much copes with 45 degrees (even our Audi was having a hard time yesterday) , but even some action would be nice ! Its a pity the design of the car is such that aircon has always been a bit of an afterthought, and that the simple physics of how it has to work mean that there is about 90 miles of pipe that leaks at the drop of a hat....the only flaw in an otherwise perfect car. :-(

I had to buy a switch recently when I installed my RS door panels to plug an extra hole...

I ordered it from Type911 in the UK (weak sterling helped), it was cheapish (20 bucks from memory, not OEM though) but I did order a bunch of other stuff to cover the postage like a new check strap etc. In anycase it was waaaaaaaaaay cheaper than Pelican. They dont seem to do small item postage rates.

Do you have a dead switch?

Switch has broken - I'm going to try and fix it with a bit of superglue and epoxy as per some of the posts on the list, but my suspicion is that it is probably going to be less stressful in the long run to just get another one for when my repair falls to bits ! Thanks for the heads up on Type911.

My car has 210k on it so I am expecting that there are going to be some of these things that are going to begin to break soon....the downside of an 18yo car that has been driven every day. Never mind.....the grin still gets bigger every day !

Have a look at the post below and it will tell you how to fix a window switch for 10 minutes work and no cost. I have fixed a couple of switches and at around AUD$140 for a new switch it is well worth it.

Alternatively, about 2 weeks ago I have bought a couple of spare switches from a fellow Rennlister in the US for $30 plus about $18 postage and had them in 5 days.
