I looked at doing this when I last had the AC bracket off mine but I'm fairly sure those small lips are what stops crap getting into where the crank seal is, I decided not to do it.

Since then I've always just pulled the studs that mount the bracket - they are cheap and easy to remove compared to the pulley.

Forgot to mention...oddly the 993 tt ac bracket comes off without removing the pulley(or pulling the studs) but it does have an extra triangle bracket bolted to the case (upper left of 2nd pic) which perhaps is there to do the same job as the lip on the 964/993 NA AC bracket ie stop crap getting to the pulley sea?
