Anyone imported 964RS to USA?
#16
Gooner, Rod Johnson in Nashvegas owns a 993 RS. I wouldn't guess that it is for sale, but he might be a good source for intel on getting it across the pond. My memory is that somehow it was badged by RUF and imported as a race car saving from some of the USDOT BS. He only tracks it, so if you are headed down that road he may be a good source. PM on the way with his email. He was an RSAmerica guy before he found the RS, and he is a great Pcar guy.

With the £pound sterling relatively weak against the Euro a number of 964RSs/clubsports have been snapped up by purchasers in Germany (taking them back home so to speak).
If you are after the best to import to the US you might have some competition from Europe. The best people to email/speak to are Paul Mclean (http://www.gtclassics.co.uk/) in UK, and Thomas Schmitz (http://www.germansportscars.de/englischstart.html) in Germany (they actually have a kind of business partnership sourcing and selling the best quality RSs in Europe).
You can register with the Porsche Club of Great Britain forum for free (you don't have to be a member). There is an active 964RS section and you'll be very welcome to come along for a chat. My handle is 'RSGulp' on there. http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tt.asp?forumid=54

I did the whole importation process myself, so I can explain it for a race car. I'll be less help for a car you'll need to federalize.

The process is long and a pain. The guy that helped me is no longer importing.
Thomas is a winner. I spent a week with him in Germany. Her found me two great cars. If you are really interested I would suggest going over there. Thomas will set you up with many cars to view. We drove about 5,000 KM in 4 days. But we saw over 15 cars.
As far as the price of import vs selling price. I sold my 993 RS at about a break even ( when I included the cost of the trip, DOT and shipping )
I would not recomend going down this road to make $$. After you drive either of these cars, you will be sold. I would not trade my 964 RS for a GT3 RS. The 964 RS is the best driving car Porsche has ever made. It is by far my first choice, and puts the biggest smile on my face.
Wallace labs gave me some good quotes. They are the only ones I know of that handle bot DOT and EPA.
As the Euro gets weaker I will be on my way for another trip. 964 Clubsport or 993 GT2 on the list....

The list of things is a little subjective to your importer.
Standard stuff:
front and Rear 5 Mph bumpers.
Tail Lights and Headlights. ( 993 Xeons are DOT )
Speedo
Airbags/ Driver only on 964
Sniff test for EPA. Should pass if stock.
Right mirror. "Objects are closer than they appear" glass.
Seatbelt warning light
Airbag info.
Vin tag on dash.
Tire pressure stickers US.
3rd brake light.
Door Beams if needed
Some other little things If I recall.
Do it, it is well worth it.

I just imported an older vehicle from Italy 2 months ago and got it inspected by DMV here in Florida quite easily. The real catch is to import a vehicle that is 25 years or older. Right now 1984 is the magic year. Unfortunately if you want to import a later vehicle be prepared for lots of red tape and expense. My car cost me 1.5% of its purchase price in customs fees. Easy importation is only a few short years away for us. The UK allows a reasonably easy SVA process which can also get messy if you don't follow it exactly.

There is recent article in 'one' of the Porsche magazines about the RS America, the racing series and the issues with DOT EPA importing, I do recall Porsche overshot the requirements. if I can find it I'll pull the relevant info.

How about simply converting and RSA to RS spec? If you're doing this for the driving pleasure, it's a more cost efficient way of getting to where you want to go without the DOT/EPA hassle. Most/if not all the parts are available from Porsche. Of course this doesn't help if you're buying for a colletion.

In 1992 Porsche built 2282 road cars distributed as:
- 1916 "Lightweights" (including 72 right-hand drive)
- 76 "Tourings" (including 11 right-hand drive).
- 290 "Clubsport" M003 cars
