Long Start
hey all,
Need some advice. Replaced my airflow meter a few months ago because it failed after my mechanic did a new clutch for me...he said it was just bad luck. Anyway, ever since this new Airflow meter thing was installed, my car has not started as "quickly". Once running shes prrrrrrfect. Unbelievably smooth actually.
But when cold, most of the time I can count 2 or 3 seconds before the motor fires up. I used to not be able to count to 1! it would literally fire up on the first spin. sometimes when cold the motor will cough ever so slightly after it fires for the first slit second. then all is good.
My mechanic says its fine and normal. When the cars hot it starts up fine. within a second.
So....couple questions. 1. Can you guys count to 2 or three when cold cranking the motor before she fires? 2. Is what Im experiencing normal? If not, what could it be? I really dont want to bother my mechanic again, as he has already replaced the AirFlow meter for free....I did a DME reset and it did not fix the problem....
Thanks!

Possibly the battery degraded during the repair work. Check the voltage at the battery terminals when the starter is turning. A strong battery should stay above 10 volts.
Slow starts can also be caused by fuel pressure leaking off between starts. Try leaving the key on for 5 seconds before cranking. The fuel pump runs when the key is on, so if you have loss of pressure that will give it time to pump back to normal before the starter turns.

I spoke to another well known Porsche mechanic near
My office. He said it's normal and to ignore it.
I would like to know however if it is normal. If anyone can tune in and share how long their cars crank before starting it would be a great way to verify. Plus any ideas on how to fix this (if u feel that it needs fixing) would be great!
Cheers.

I find that my car will sometimes crank longer if I don't wait about six beeps of the safety belt buzzer with the key on (but not all the way to start). Not very often, though. I also get the very occasional hard start when hot.
For the most part, I wait a few seconds with the key on and it starts up within a few cranks.

You mentioned that the car's behavior changed after a clutch change, have you double checked it the starter ground strap is attached? Does the starter motor sound slower than before?
hey rocket
Thanks or tuning in. Sounds like the starter is turning as fast as usual. Even if she's been running for a few seconds, still cold, if I shut her off, the next start will be smooth and quick.
It seems to take longer if she had been sitting longer than 8 hours.
Something must have changed during the tranny drop when the new clutch went in. When I got the car back the idle would hunt up and down 400 rpm. Took it back and my mechanic said it was a bit of bad luck and that the airflow meter box. (silver box behind the airbox) had failed. Gave me a new one for free.
Now she runs perfect when on but just doesn't start as perfectly or as quickly as before. I'm no mechanic but if I had to guess, it's as if the fuel doesn't build up fast enough when cold. Who knows....

Awesome! Tried it this morning. Worked great. Thanks you fixed my starting problems.
