HELP!! Hood release not working
#31
The engine hood's route isn't as obvious or straightforward as the front hood, that's for sure.
It's late here, and I couldn't find any pertinent pics.
If I don't see someone pop in with the goods then I'll snap some Friday eve, Sat.
At the time I didn't drop any bumper pieces, so had to fish the line blind for a little of it's travels. (Believe I used a coat hanger to guide the way? ie, like the front there's not guide pipe to route it -- you just pick your points...) No doubt removal of that center (red-pink!) lens would'a made the job easier...

This thread really comes handy. Chet's car just suffered this issue. We wil tackle opening the hood tonight. And I will make sure we put a backup cable in both cars!
Thank you as always for sharing!!!

Ilk (or, anyone), what's the take down method for that center lens?
Wish I'd known about that. Negotiating that little 3/8" dia hole "in the blind" because of that center lens was a hindering PITA.

Lonnie, my center lens is broken and is only held by the three screws at the top. It was broken on my old 964 as well, so I guess it's a common thing. I believe there are tabs at the bottom of the lens that you can wiggle out and set it free
The emergency cable was available only on 92+ cars and not on all of them AFAIK.

Looks a lot like yours, Ilk.
The tail overview shot shows there's no twin passage hole on the right side.
(Guess that little 1/2-3/8" hole is meant to be just for this emergency lanyard.)
There's yellow tape on my end loop because I'd seen other lanyards rub paint raw at the loop end.
Only a precautionary measure I did at the time.
Haven't looked here in over a year -- seems to be holding up.

It's worth noting that the catch mechanism used on the pre-92 cars is very different, using a notched pillar which drops into a circular latch. On this early design the release of tension in the cable (i.e. when it breaks) fully releases the catch so there is no purpose for an emergency release cable.
I had my cable break (actually I broke the handle trying to straighten it!!) and the engine cover popped open on it's own as I was driving along. The replacment cable, handle and grommet came to less than $40 from the OPC.
Regards
