HELP!! Hood release not working
Just got back from town, went to open the trunk hood, pulled the hood release , and nothing, the handle is just flapping back and forth, feels like the wire is broken. Does anybody know how to get in there now?
Thanks

If you remove the driver side wheel well liner you should have a secondary cable that you can pull. Not sure if the earlier cars came equipped with it, mine is a '93 and has it. If that doesn't work I think there is a third way, but it involves taking the front bumper off. Maybe someone else can chime in on that.
But before you go there, is the cable still attached to the hood release handle in the foot well? I've seen it come off the handle in the past, so I would check that first.

BAD NEWS, my car does not have the extra wire in the left wheel well. Please tell me that there is another way to get the hood open.
Thanks

The early cars - at least prior to 1992 - don't have the emergency pull. I have no specific suggestions but most other reports I have seen of the same problem usually involve some very accurate drilling from underneath the car to access the locking mechanism.
Sorry I can't be more specific but I've not had the problem myself (yet!!).

So the cable stayed attached to the cabin handle?
(If it broke at the cabin handle I'd suggest grabbing onto the broken cable end with a vise-grip pliers.)
Else, I've got nuthin'.

I have a 91 C2 and have the exact same problem. my hood release just broke yesterday. I too have no handle on the drivers side wheel well.
if anyone has any DYI's to fix this issue please post. I am going to call the local Porsche wrench and see if they have any ideas. I will post if I get any info.
Thanks
John

In light of this situation can us early 964 owners proactively add the emergency release cable to our cars (both front and rear) seeing as the part is still available? Is there a DIY or a few pics to show how to hook up the emergency cable?

(It appeared cut -- someone had diked it!)
Make your own. Something weather resistant (stainless, cad, ?), multi-strand, loop it at one end w/ a wire rope crush grommet. (Or buy Porsche's perfect solution.)
There was an extra/sister cable attach hole in my hood latch mechanism -- just like Porsche had planned to install an emergency release cable there! Route it out (at the other end) through one of the rubber passage grommets to pass through the tub side wall. Keep it simple, laying it alongside the primary pull wire till you come to the grommet point area. Loosely hold the bare rope in place with a few loosely cinched zip-ties. Give it a trial go to prove it works, then leave it alone. Rest easy that you've now two ways into your trunk.
And just cuz I'm feeling mischevious this morning -- don't forget the emergency release to your rear hood.
(The emergency release lanyard on my red was missing there, as well. Ain't life swell?)

Local Porsche service was not aware that the earier cars did not have an emergency release. They said to just leave the car and they would sort it out.
Rather then pay them for trial and error, does anyone have any ideas.
from this thread and other searches so far I have heard of two options .
1) Drill a 1 inch hole from under the car and try and get to the release.
2) Take the front bumper off.
Does anyone have any expirences with either of these two or any pictures ?
My hope is if we keep this thread alive for long enough someone will see it that has had this problem.
thanks again for all of you who lend a hand

I suggested taking the front bumper off, but I think I made a mistake by saying that. IIRC, there are 4 or 5 screws that hold the top of the bumper that are only accessible if you have the hood open. It's been a while since I've taken my front bumper off.
Now that I think about it, the whole locking mechanism is INSIDE the trunk, so taking the bumper off will probably not help at all.

I was thinking, would it be possible to slide a hacksaw blade in between two pieces of shimstock, one on top, one on the bottom, so the blade does not touch the rubber seal or the underside of the hood, and then cut through the locking bolt. Could somebody post some pictures with the hood open so I could get a look at the location of the various parts in question.
Thanks in advance
