With early 996's hovering in the 25-27K range now, is this a good sign for our cars??

Good prospect, but aren't the 1999s models to stay away from due to the starvation issue? From what I understand, it is a fairly costly fix (~$2000). Even so, with a bit of a negotiation, you could get that car for ~$20k, including the oil fix. Not bad...

Silver/beige combination... perhaps that is driving the price down!

$20k will get you a 964 with similar miles or less. Honestly, what would you rather have; one of the best cars Porsche ever made or one of the the worst? Notice how I leave it to you to determine which is which??

And thats the essence of the problem; as cheap as the 996s are getting, there are currently arguably better P-car alternatives. Call me when they get to $15k.

No, we never found a "smoking gun" that you could point to. Most likely just a weak or flawed rod bearing from the factory that finally went. The lower end of the engine had never been gone through, so it was all factory original bearings.

However, interestingly enough, I had taken an oil sample when the oil was changed about a month before the rod bearing failed. I had never sent it in because I got distracted and forgot to. After the bearing failed, I sent the sample in to Blackstone Labs for analysis. I didn't tell them that the engine had failed because I wanted to get an unbiased report. The report they sent back said the oil was reading excessively high in iron, copper, and lead. They went on to say in the notes that they were concerned about bearing wear and said that they would expect that I might be hearing some knocking (by this time, the engine was torn apart for rebuild!). Also, ironically, they said the top end metals were all good. Before my engine builder tore the engine down, he ran a leakdown on it and said that the leakdown numbers were all good (2 to 3%) and the compression numbers were all good. So my top end was in excellent condition!

Now the top end is even better and the engine is overbuilt for durability. Should hold up for a long time.

Okay, so none of us are safe ... great!

Thanks for sharing! Having a bulletproof powerplant sounds awesome.
