Default early years 964 or late 80's 911???

I am currently looking at either a 1990 or 1991 911(964) c2 cab, and I was just reading something written about the late 80's porsche 911's, and how the engine and g50 transmission were "bulletproof". I had also heard that the early 964's had problems, but the car i am looking at is a 1990 but the current owner isn't sure if there was a gasket head leak ( i also read that porsche had a recall on those to re seal them) but he has owned the car since the mid 90's and didn't know if it was done. I suspect it hasn't because i did a car fax check and it didn't show any recall work being completed. what to do???

964 = Better Car in all respects. I have a 89 C4 964 with 150k miles and its never had the leak. Not all 964's had this leak and most are fixed at this point. Also, I believe the dealers marked the heads with a "-10" or "-20" when the fix was performed. It was not a recall campaign but if cars exhibited this issue then Porsche repaired for free.

Get a PPI on the potential 964.

IIRC, "weeping" at the seam did not qualify for the free fix. My engine "weeps" (gently) but doesn't drip on the garage floor, so BFD. I've driven both types - go for the 964, you'll be glad you did. The 3.2's seem to be getting a premium these days purely on 'mystique', making the 964 an even better deal if you look at what you're getting: more torque, more power, effective A/C, etc., etc.

I was in a similar situation 6 years ago. Once I realized how much more you get with the 964 the decision was easy. I have never regreted the choice. I have since had the chance to drive a 3.2 Carrera and was really amazed at how really old and odd it felt. Slower too. Once the 964 issues are corrected and most are by now then they are just as bulletproof as any other 911.

Unless you want the 'feel' of an older 911, the 964 is the better car in just about every aspect.

As stated above, drive both and your decision should be easy. All older cars will require maintenance - that's part of the deal!

I just liked the 964 better. Mine is an '89 with 72k, love it dearly.
