Default Considering Selling My 93 America Roadster

I have an opportunity to buy a 993 Turbo S and I'm churning inside as to whether or not to part with my concours condition AR...

My AR is #194 of only 250 and one of only 86 built in 93... Original sticker price was $98,280.00... I'm the 2nd owner with only 31,000 miles...

Thoughts? Price?

Some pics below...

Dunno. It is a rare and collectable car, but the idle rich are as idle and rich as they once were. The market is soft. Also not many trade hands, so valuation is difficult. My WAG: $38K - 42K. Usual caveats: more $$$ if you find the right buyer (possibly overseas). Much less $$$ if you need to unload in a hurry.

A 993 Turbo S would be an awesome addition. I am in agreement with Spriner3 on the overall market. If you can keep the AR, while taking on the Turbo S, I would do that rather than to take a quick offer. The 964/965's don't come by very often and I intend to keep mine for as long as I can.

Good luck and keep us posted if you get the Turbo S.

Big difference between need and want... Both are rare but I would never give away the AR especially one in this condition... So if it's meant to be, it's meant to be... If not, it won't be the last deal to come along... So I'm not pressed to sell at all...

I know I love driving the AR... So it's a tough decision...

Not to sound ignorant, but what distinguishes an America Roadster from the 964 cabs? I know it is a widebody (looking at the photo), but what else? Does it have a unique serial number? I'm not very familiar with them.

They only made 250 of them... They are a 965 with a C2 wing & NA engine... They have ROADSTER on the engine lid and not Carrera... Very hard to find... A lot of Porsche owners didn't even know Porsche made a Roadster... Just written up in Excellence magazine as the one Porsche to buy now that will become extremely collectable...

When you consider the production numbers of the Speedster and RS America the Roadster is extremely rare...

So, it's a widebodied 964 cab with turbo suspension with "roadster" emblem instead of "carrera 2"?.

Well, sure -- if you're gonna say it like that... it doesn't sound all 'that...

But... it goes to 11.

Nahh, I'm just busting on Tull30. Like everything else he owns, I am sure it is rare and collectable.

I'm not familiar with these cars too much... Which one of the 964 convertibles was selling in the $70K range? I remember a dealer from Canada offering one here recently and posting that he got his asking price.

I'm sure there are people in the market for a rare car, list it and see where it goes.

oh, yeah -- that one was a speedster (white?). And he got his eye-popping price. (Least, it popped my eyes!) To an EU customer, as I recall.

What the market will bear, wtmwb...

wide body + tall glass vs. narrow body + short glass.

That's it!!!! Speedster. I was trying to remember the badge on the one I saw outside TPC in Maryland, with narrow body and short glass. The Speedster was the one that is very rare and collectable.

Turbo Suspension & Brakes... So it's a 965 with a 964 engine & wing... Almost all the components of the car are stamped starting with 965.xxx.xxx.xxx AND, when you get your CERTIFICATE of AUTHENTICITY from Porsche the model of the car printed on it will be: PORSCHE AMERICA ROADSTER

It's an America Roadster... Do some homework and you will see... Because you you never know if you're going to wake up one morning and decide you gotta have a Porsche Convertible before you croak, but have your sight set on ONLY the factory "Turbo-look" Wide-Bodied Version...Well, your choices are extremely limited. Either you pick from:

1. The Late Eighties "Turbo Look" / Slantnose Cabriolet's (Limited Edition - over 1000 produced)

2. The Late Eighties Turbo Cab's (Very Limited Edition - over 800 produced)

3. The 1989 Carrera Speedster (Limited Edition - 2100 produced wide-body and 121 narrow-body)(the 1994 Speedster had a traditional body except for 6 of them which were special ordered as wide-bodies - I wonder what they are worth)

4. Or, the Super Collectible Turbo Bodied Convertible - The America Roadster (only 250 produced; 164 in 1992 & 86 in 1993)

Of course Porsche forgot to market it properly as the 40th Anniversary Edition of the original America Roadster of which only 16 were produced (and only 11 are known to still exist), so they shot themselves in the foot... That coupled with a base price starting at $85,000 made them difficult to sell in 92-93... Of course, now they are becoming collectable just when I come across a Turbo S in Guards Red also... Life is full of these little or BIG temptations

Well, I sold my 1970 Shelby GT350 Convertable after holding onto it for 32 years and never thought I would... We shall see what the market brings... There will always be another Turbo S for sale as will there be an America Roadster...
