Default shifter linkage

I recently had one of the clutch slave cylinders replaced on my 1992 cab. Now I cannot shift into reverse. Is there any relationship between the slave cylinder and the linkage?

Hmm... someone else will know better than I, but did they have to lower the tranny down to get working room to replace the slave cylinder? If so, then yes, there is a relationship.

+1 - it depends on how the slave cylinder was replaced. I have replaced mine without lowering the engine/tranny and in doing so, the shift linkage is untouched. If someone dropped the engine and/or tranny, then you may disconnect the shift linkage.

Do you mean you can't shift into reverse because it grinds, or because you can't find reverse in the shift pattern?

If you can't find it because of grinding of gears, suspect air in the hydraulic system preventing full release of the clutch.

ok heres the deal. all forward gears work, but when i try to put it into reverse it either grinds or i put into reverse let go of the clutch and hit the gas and it does nothing but rev like its in neutral, also the reverse lights do go on when its in that situation. from what ive read it has to do with the shift linkage thats under the shift boot. Correct me if im wrong though...

It sounds to me as though you have air in the clutch hydraulic system that needs to be bled off.

I bet you are not *truly* in reverse, but have moved the shift rail just enough to turn on the back up light switch, but not enough to actually engage the reverse gear.

The forward gears work because their syncromesh overcomes the lack of complete clutch release.

I suspect you are correct that the linkage is screwy.

Does anyone have documentation on insuring proper alignment of the linkage?

The alignment of the linkage occurs within the transmission case. There is only a single bolt to connect the shift rod to the transmission and it is self centering.

I'm going to agree with Cupcar and suggest that the line be bled again due to the reverse gear not having a syncro.

I'm getting an education too. That makes sense Geoffrey. For some reason I had in my mind that if the bushings get worn it can come out of alignment, but I may have been thinking about another vehicle.

The secondary bleed is pretty easy so it does make sense to do the easy stuff first.
