Can any techies advise on whether to change gearbox oil on a 15k mile
15 year old car. No record of it ever being done.My mechanic says not
necessary.

For the sake of the cost of the oil (and a small labour charge if not DIY) it's got to be worth changing it just for the peace of mind. Gearbox oil is often neglected and changing it often results in much smoother changes. At least once you've done it you know it's done - why guess??

Interesting that this should be the first post I see when I come here this morning because I've noticed that the shifting is very notchy with my new acquisition. My conclusion yesterday is that I need to service the tranny oil. If you don't know when it was done, or you know that it's 15 years old and is a serviceable item, then I vote that you baseline it with current products so you know the exact state of things.

Hmm. I wonder... With the engine, you can get water in the oil tank through condensation. I wonder if this could be the same with the gearbox oil and be a potential corrosion issue? My vote would be to have it changed.

Not as likely to get condensation as the engine as there is no combustion in the gear box, but still possible to get some contaminants. It's an easy DIY and the oil costs about $50... just do it!

thats what they were told at some OPCs !

I think the service schedule says to change it every 80,000km so perhaps this is what he's going on. I'd change it anyway.

Easy call: Change fluid. Save the ponder. Cheap insurance.
Rationale works for all three fluids: motor, gear, brake/clutch.

+1 on Delvac. Just change mine - 113k miles 1990 cab. Prior owner used redline. I thought it made the shifting a bit smoother for the first few miles but now after a few weeks it feels the same.

I want to use this. Where to buy? Will my local Advanced Auto have this?

Local advanced will not carry this. You may see some quart bottles that have a similar name on them, but I have been told that is not the same stuff as what comes in the gallon jug. I get mine from Lufteknic, here in Richmond, VA. They will ship it if you can't find any locally. Here's the link.
