Default Plastic film on fuel gauge face?

All,

I have a '91 C2 and I removed the 'unleaded fuel only' sticker from my fuel gauge face. At close inspection you can see where the sticker was and it looks like there is still a plastic film in place over the glass. Am I seeing things or can I remove this for a clearer gauge face?

Thanks

Maybe acetone. Works well on adhesives.

hans,
All of the gauges except for the speedo have glass faces. When I removed the same decal on my '95, the glass face cleaned up easily.

Acetone will attack most plastics!

You probably have acetone in the house and don't know it. Borrow your significant others nail polish remover. (If you are not into that sort of thing yourself.)

But first make sure you are not trying to clean a plastic surface. Acetone will craze some plastics. Please don't ask me how I know...

Another more benign cleaner is rubbing alcohol (aka: isopropanol or isopropyl alcohol). This will typically not attack plastics.

Either Goo-Gone or Goof-Off would a be safer glue removing solvent than acetone.

Got all points, thanks.

The thing is, I think I see still plastic covering the entire glass area after I removed the unleaded fuel sticker. can anyone confirm this?

I think there is a plastic film on the inside. Mine are hard glass on the outer surface.

Watch out if you use solvents - the dash area is painted, and there are lots of plastic items around. One drip or careless swipe and you make a mess. Try Windex or a razor blade before getting into solvents.

I only see the plastic on fuel gauge, the others are glass only. I may just leave it.

Mine feels like plastic on the fuel gauge as well as the oil temp gauge. They both feel like they have a clear plastic film on them when I tap them with my finger nail. The other gauges feel like hard glass.

Yes, that is what I am talking about. I am wondering if that was part of the unleaded fuel sticker that remains after the small sticker has been peeled off. I wanted to see if anyone else has removed that plastic to leave behind the nice clear glass like the other guages have.

All the glass gauges have a laminated plastic safety film to prevent shards of broken glass from hitting the driver & passsenger.
