Gentlemen,
I have the opportunity to buy a NOS Varioram intake manifold off a 993 engine.
What are your views: would it be a worthwhile project to fit the Varioram manifold to a 964 engine?
Thank you for your suggestions!

If you have the entire engine and electronics, then yes, good. The varioram intake is designed to mate with the 993 43mm intake port, not the 41mm intake port of the 964. You also need a way to control the varioram electronics, so you need a computer, either stock or aftermarket. Basically what I'm saying is that it is not a direct bolt on, but rather will require some engineering to get it to work. Also, it is rather heavy.

I think the biggest gain will be from fitting 993 heads, and along with that can go the vram intake. Altogether it will make an extensive project that will end with essentially a 993 engine...
Good luck.
Good luck.

Don't fit the 993 heads, it is a backward step for a 964 engine. The inlet ports on the 993 heads are 43mm whereas the 964 heads are 41.5mm - the last thing you need on this engine is reduced intake port velocity because it will lower the VE of the engine (i.e. make less torque/power) across the rpm range.

I looked into that back when my engine shelled a rod bearing and I was talked out of it. I wish I could remember the details now, but it involved swapping more than just the motors and the gain for all the expense wasn't that much horsepower over the 964.

Yes, it can easily be done, you can also fit the 993 valves and guides into the 964 heads and have the benefit of thinner stems and lighter valves. The only problem is that the 993 exhaust will not fit because the 964 heads have two exhaust flange stud positions whereas the 993 has four to cope with the symetrical heat exchangers; so not a problem if the engine is destined for a 964 but no good for a 993.
Develop the logic further and it will be obvious why we made the 9m billet heads which fit both engines ....
