There must be some difference in the 993 from the 964 that I am not aware of. My recollection is my LSD was replaced without transmission removal. I'd remember 23 hours of labor. I'll see if I can find the receipt...

Yeah Tom probably was thinking about the 964 C2 - I believe you can do it with the tranny right there in the car - just remove the axle, housing plate, and go to town. 2 hours sounds right. Good info to know about the 993's though.

The diffs can be swapped in a few hours w/ engine and trans in situ.

It takes a lot more time if the new and old diff have even a small difference in length. That means that the gear lash has to be reset w/ shims. This can be very time consuming.

I had mentioned this and was aware of it but this is a problem with most any Porsche receiving a new LSD.

Ironically there was a technical question in the January issue of Pano. Don't recall if it was Stephen or someone else responding but their opinion was removal of the tranny (if needed) on a 993 or 964 was much easier than attempting to do it on an earlier 915 tranny car they also had made mention that working on them while still in the car was easier too.

A good racing differential like the Gaurd unit, or the PMNA unit is not the most appropriate unit to be used in a street application. The preload on the new PMNA GT3 Cup (8 plate) differential is 6x more than the preload specified for a road differential. Even the older GT3 Cup (4 plate) differential is 2x more on the preload. These diffs are for cars running slicks under high cornering loads (1.5g+) and are used in transmissions that have coolers installed. These diffs will generate lots of heat. You can alter the floater plate thickness to change the preload and if you set it at the street spec, these diffs will be great. So, a partially worn GT3 Cup diff is exactly the right unit for a street car.

Installing my diff did not take anywhere near 23 hours. IIRC, it was about $800 for labor.
