Broken Belt? Which One Broke?
I was starting out at a stop light and my belt started to skreech. I tried to flutter the clutch, but the belt kept slipping and started to smoke. I opened the engine compartment and the belt was melting to the pulley. I am not certain which belt it was. I think it was the alternator belt. Can you guys tell me which belt is in the middle. Here is a picture of the belts. This is not my car, but will work. The A/C belt is off in the picture. The second one in is the belt that was slipping and eventually broke.
Can someone please tell me which belt this is? I am praying it is not the distributer belt.
Please Help!

Big pulley is the fan. Small pulley is the alternator. The belt that is loose is from the AC compressor on the right. One of its mounting bolts is missing, and that probably allowed the compressor to shift and let the belt jump. You are lucky - my AC belt dented my rear lid when it broke.

Go out to the car and spin the pulley by hand .
How does the pulley spin ? Nice and easy ? Smooth as silk ?
Any looseness to the pulley , forwards or backwards ? Side to side ?
springer3
Its not a photo of his car / motor .
He has grabbed a photo from someplace .

Thanks Guys.
Indy, I checked the alternator pulley by spinning it and attempting to move it foward and backward, and side to side. There did not seem to be any play whatsoever and the pulley spun freely, like silk. There was another post that talked about an "indicator" on the pulley to see if it was bad. Doesn't really make sense to me. Anyone heard of this?
BTW: My battery was extreemly low, as I have not driven the car in over a month. Could this be why the alternator belt was skreeching in the first place? If so, this seems rediculous to me. Why couldn't a $60,000 car keep up with recharging its own battery?
Thanks again.

When you spin the pulley and look at it spinning , do you see any runnout ?
The dial indicator is a tool that you would place on any surface of any exposed part of the shaft and or pulley . I would not worry about the run out or dial indicator . Run out will not kill a belt unless it a major big time run out . If it was a major run out you would see it when you spun the pulley and looked for run out .

"What is the difference?"
One will say porsche on it
and the other will say conti on it .
If you really need your alt belt to say , "I'm a porsche" , then buy the porsche branded one .
