I'm curious about the statement that several people made about the 964 being more raw. Can you clarify? Other than the 6 spd and about 20 more horsepower, what difference is there between these cars mechanically? I thought the rest was just cosmetic changes. Just curious.

On the 993 forum one of the main complaints about the 996 is it's not raw enough I like the more olds school looks of the 964 and I cant tell much difference in the 2. If I drove one without being able to see the outside besides the 6 speed it would be very hard to tell the difference.
I dont think very many people are thinking you are "you're a rich *******" because you drive a 10+ year old 993. Possibly more like someone thats constantly worried about how much your car is worth

I've also owned both and both are great cars. My 993 was more of a garage queen and my current 964 is certainly not. I agree with others that it's not worth it to own one of these cars and not drive them which ever version you have. I like the looks of the 993 more and the exhaust note with the motor sound option was great. I also prefer the 5 speed in the 964 over the 6-speed in the 993. Both of my cars were C4s and they are totally different animals. The 993 C4 is much more like a RRD car while the 964 C4 certainly feels like all wheel drive. I switched for economic reasons and will most likely pick up another 993 in a few years.

I have both, and there are differences. The engine in the 993 is more quiet. Besides the hydraulic valves in the 993, there is not much difference. However, the sound is really different. Mine 964 without the bypasses (had the G-pipe but it sounded like a Harley) is louder and deeper--and much more mechanical sounding. The 993 with a 1.5 LPMM is louder, but doesn't have the mechanical clicks and clacks of the 964. As for driving feel my had Bilstein+Eibach, while the 993 has Bilstein+H&R+sway. The 964 feels much lighter and nimble. The 993 is more soft.

Now that I have a 993, I think I like a 964 more, especially a wide body. Anyone wanna trade?

TR6, raw may not be the best way to describe the difference in feel. For me the 964 feels more mechanical, maybe not quite as polished as the 993. I think the multi-link suspension on the 993 provides a much more compliant and probably better performing ride, however I like how you can feel the 964 working all the time as it negotiates the road. In no way am I trying to say the 993 is numb feeling in any way, quite the contrary. Either way you can not lose!

Having owned a 3.2 Carrera five years ago, I can say that, because the shape of the 911 is so instantly recognizable, has not changed all that much (to the untrained eye) and because it has a somewhat unattainable status, everyone thought that my '85 911 cost me an arm and a leg and that I was fabulously wealthy. It was even worse when I drove the 993 on the street. The difference now is that when they see my race car, they think I'm fabulously wealthy and a money-burning fool. They're half right.

even a base 993 has clearly superior brakes, 993 has ~ 20hp more minimum, whether you like the body or not the wheel wells allow for a very reasonable selection of wheels and tires.

Other than that and esthetics it is pretty much a draw

Pedro got it right. Once you've heard an air cooled engine, smelled the oil and gas, crude is good up and down the line.

I'm biased to the 993, but what do I know?

My current 993. Its current state is a bit different. No chin spoiler and side skirt. Also added a "Carrera" script.

Does it make anyone change their mind about the 993?

So how many people did Total 911 survey to come up with that tag line ? Not me and not the 5 guys working at my local Porshe specialist. Mind you, I can never make up my mind. Sometimes I see a 933 in the flesh and think, Why did I buy that old fashioned 964?, other times I think 993s just look a bit blobby and fat arsed Guess it comes down to whatever floats your boat; boths cars are great choices, you can't go wrong.
