Default 993 to 964...why and why not?

I am looking for opinions. What do you think about moving from a 993 back a couple of years to a 964? Why would you do it and why wouldn't you?

Thanks in advance!

Well for me, you'll lose the jelly mould styling, get a proper 911 silouhette but still have that aircooled aloofness and beard.

I wouldn't. The only reason would be because a 964 is cheaper. However, I think a 964 will require more age-related maintenance due to rubber falling apart, etc. So, which the purchase cost might be less, in the long run it might cost as much or more than a 993.

I also think 993's look better, but that's an even more subjective assessment.

I'd say it would come down to which you think you like the looks of better. Body style. If you prefer the old school profile of the stove pipe front fenders/headlamps, go with the 964. If you prefer the more sleek, slanted front end, go with the 993. I don't think you can draw enough distintinction between them mechanically to favor one over the other.

My personal opinion is that I prefer the tail of the 993 and the nose of the 964. But I'd really like to be able to afford one of each!

Why would you want to move back to a 964? Do you think you can sell the 993 for more coin and buy a cheaper 964? I'm not sure I'd trade my 993 for a 964, but I would certainly consider a 964 as another car or, more importantly for me, as a more viable PCA club racing car. They're fast, reliable and very good-looking, although not my favorite looking 911.

I paid for my 1993 C2 964 42K U$S here in Buenos Aires, you have to pay at least 70K U$S for a nice 993 here, so 993 wasn`t really an option...
but I sure like them

The 993 does not look like a 911. It looks like a 993.
The 993 has hydraulic valves. The whirl of the 964 mechanicals is wonderful.

What moves you?

As previously stated, only reason I can imagine is economics. And unless you have things laid out (buyer for yours, and your 964 purchase identified), you're kinda chasing your tail. Not having driven my RSA on the street for nearly a year, I was just amazed how crude it felt taking it home last Saturday after driving the C4S all over the place daily for the past two months.

If you drive a 993 everyone assumes you're a rich ******* driving a newer Porsche.

I agree with Pedro - do what makes you happy, not what we suggest you do.

I had some guy make a snide remark about my parked 65 911 to his son once as I was getting into it... something about Porsches make people think strange things...

I have one 964 that is totally sedate, and one that's an animal - same year, same model... one's just totally modified while the other is stock. Like the other guys say, get which one you like the looks of, since that's really the only difference between the models!!

Thanks everyone. As usual a well-rounded group of responses and good advice. Cars like these are all about what moves the owner/appreciator and in all honesty I think Ken (race911) summed up what it is I think I'd be getting by moving "back"...a little less polish, a little more crudeness. And as funny as it sounds every time I drive the 993 I feel the "you're a rich *******" vibe that Dan mentions. Depending on my mood I either embrace it, ignore it or try to refute it.

Anyway. I know where I stand (today anyway). One of the nice things about being torn in this way is that if I find a good example it really doesn't matter which car I end up with. The smile/satisfaction factor will be off the charts.

Thanks again.

I've had both and on different days I favor one or the other. If this will be a car for the street (can't speak for the track) then you can't go wrong with either. 993 will offer a little more refinement where as the 964 is just slightly more raw. I like the five speed in the 964 for street driving significantly more. The gap between 1st and 2nd in the 993 is annoying (of course that can be changed). If I were looking, I would find the best example available (within reasonable cost) and choose based on condition. Both are fantastic. Good luck!
