Default NEW! 9m Racing tuneable length 993/964 headers

Sometimes in business you do question the motivation which leads you to investing in the design and development of a new product for an "old" market. In the case of the new 9m Racing 993/964 race header/silencer package, the answer is that after I spent a lot of time and money investigating and testing pretty much every existing product, I came to the conclusion that there would be a clear market for a top quality race header and silencer package that would fit both the 993 and 964 platform. As far as I am aware, this is the first true equal length header/silencer package that will also fit both cars, albeit with minor changes to the silencer mount and cross-over pipes. The design allows you to use standard or aftermarket 993 silencers on the 993, whereas on the 964 we will be offering our own similar pattern silencers as shown on the prototype fitted to our 964Cup car.

I have recently tested the system on my 4.0 litre 993 race engine and managed to find around 30hp & 40Nm against the stock 993 headers that it replaced whilst retaining the same N-GT silencers. As you can see in the photo (if you look close enough) we only have the oil pipe routing to resolve on the 964 before we can test the system on a car with a standard engine to see what gains we can find.

The close-up shows the straight section before and after the collector, by removing the primary spacer tubes and adding one in the secondary you can adjust the primary length in 50mm (2") steps from 500mm (20") to 650mm (26"). Usually the longer length primary will favour torque and the shorter length power, a feature which I have already found to work on my engine and which is very useful for moving the power band around when switching from a fast open circuit to a tight & twisty hillclimb course. I'll post power graphs of the various configurations as soon as I can.

At the moment we have no plans to add heater boxes as these are firmly aimed at the race car market, but I dare say we maye be persuaded to look at this in the near future. Noise levels are expected to be around 100-102dBa at 0.5m from the tips (to meet most UK trackday requirements). So, early days yet, we have still a little development to finish and more testing to do, but we should have systems for sale before the end of the year, the expected price is in the region of £4000 for the complete header/silencer/crossover package.

I had the same oil line issue and ended up buying a 1974 911 oil line, cutting it, welding an A/N fitting on the end, and routing it along the frame rail to the oil filter console. Much nicer routing it that way.

Cool! Any before and after dyno tests for a completely stock motor? The 993 race guys in stock classes have been craving this.

Just a side question that i have always wondered, with these headers (and the 993 design in general? ) you effectively have two seperate banks of three. How are they tested come mot time on a 964 ? the tester will have data for a six cylinder engine's CO HC etc but he can only place the tester on one bank ?

The system will always be a two silencer package, but (as always?) we have planned well ahead and made a "stealth outlet" for the LHS if required. It is simply a down-turned tailpipe which is level with and angled the same as the stock bumper section so it is not visible from behind the car.

Just fitting the oil pipe now - it appears that the stock 964 pipe will actually still fit above the silencer and may just need a slight hollow putting in the silencer can for a tad of extra clearance - so that's good news on that front as well.

I'll photo the oil pipe and stealth outlet later on today.

Not a problem Laurence, he will probably only test one side but technically he should test both. It's only the same as a stock 993/996/997 turbo or any 993 running with 100cell cats, so don't worry. In any case, all pre-93 964's do not have to run a cat, so emission requirements for these cars will not be a problem, even if running with stock Motronic or Motec. Don't forget also that the headers have been designed for racing, so MOT requirements are not exactly at the top of the list of my requirements!

Beautiful ! Would an option to have free flowing cats versus the 'silencers' be feasible for the 993??? Or could 200 cell cats be installed prior to the silencers and then simply opt to delete the silencers with a special pipe or even keep the silencers? Realize the cats add significant restriction, but maybe the header design would obviate some of the cat-restricted issues, especially if the silencers could be bypassed thereby using the cat as the 'silencer'?

I have a better chance of winning the lottery in the short term... and just as soon as I do, I am going to crate up my motor and send it to Colin for the whole treatment!
