Finally got my lift set up for 2 cars!
Well, you may remember when I first posted a pic of my new lift back in early September. I now have the ceiling raised so that a second car will fit under it also!! Just a little tape, bed and paint and I am ready for a new floor, HVAC, TV, full snap-on tools....... I guess it never ends but this is pretty cool to me. Now one race car gets to live at home

OK This got complicated. You need around 11 - 12' for two sports cars. Obviously more room for sedans. BUT, the real problem is the garage door. If it comes over the car like mine then you will need at least 9' over the area where the garage door returns so you can use a high lift track system for the door. With this track the garage door returns over the hood of my 964 and the coffer we framed in the ceiling lets the roof of the 964 go high enough. If you look closely at the pic you can see it.
I ended up buying new garge doors since mine were too low and old plus with the high lift track a standard door opener will not fit anymore so I bought a really cool Chamberlian opener that mounts on the torsion bar and turns it to open and close the door which I installed myself.
This was the end of years of planning which at one point had me building real carriage doors that would swing out manually. Glad I didn't go that route!

OK Here are pics of my new doors and the opener I had to use with the high lift door. The doors are insulated metal painted to look like wood. People think they are real wood in person.

How about the lift for the car itself. Any details? I am especially interested in how the opened door clears the hood of the car on the top rack.

The lift is from Derek Weaver Company in Fort Worth. This worked for me as I drove over one day to check it out before buying. The open door clears the hood of the 964 by about 4 inches. Which is plenty for the 996 under it. Again, sedans woild be a problem I think.

The door is standard but the rails for the single door over the lift are the high lift rails which make the door hug the ceiling.

I went through the same process myself about a year ago. I was able to use the existing door and opener mechanism. The contractor simply added 30" extentions to the rails and added heavier springs. Oh, he did this by himself - and he has only one arm!
