Imagine my surprise that I have photos of Garrett's engines dropped!

Thanks for the pics!

Hawk, how'd you make out last night?

Did you lower the engine?

Hope you're out driving!

nope- see last post. I still need help. the starter is on, just not wired up. I didn't take pics cuz i had the DIY right there.

BTW- my old starter would not extend the gear to engage the flywheel when we tried it off the car by hand. the new one did, so I'm sure this solves my issue, once it's got power.

There are only 3 wires on the starter: two on the left pole (orient from this pic) which are the large positive cable from the battery, and the smaller solenoid cable. The other pole has a wire already attached that is not a positive cable. The picture below shows the left pole with the red wire which is to the solenoid; the nut is loosened and the larger positive cable that's hanging from the chassis gets attached to it - that's it! Don't forget the ground cable that attaches to the lower starter motor mounting nut.

Garrett, Wher does the large ground from the batt go? Geoff and I were beating our heads trying to attach it to the right post.

The large black ground wire from the rear chassis suspension crossmember goes to the lower mounting nut of the starter itself where it meets the transmission housing. That wire often gets forgotten and leads to issues!

on this engine you can see (hopefully) how the wire was detached from the suspension crossmember, not at the starter mounting bolt...

nope; the other black wire. How does that route to end up on what I'd call the inside post? Inside, because it's between the selenoid and the tranny tunnel area.

THe one Geoff and I are having trouble with comes from the front of the car (not the chassis) I beleive it is the main negitive from the batt it's self (sorry if these seem dumb questioins but I've never done a starter on a 964)

maybe a better question is what does the blade look like on the black wire. The one on my car is more like a triangle than a boat oar. the boat oar is what I'd consider standard electrical for an auto connection.

Here's the image that best shows the connections we're having trouble with.
