wish me luck!
so its cold again, and my starter is acting up again. Tonight I have to get the darn thing changed out with its replacement. I'm not looking forward to the job, as it seems like a dark cramped place to work, but I'm not looking forward to being stranded somewhere either.

If you're comfortable doing so, lower the engine and transmission by a few inches. The extra clearance will save you a lot of headache with the upper starter bolt.

I'm thinking Houdini, unless someone has a real good tip for not dropping the engine on myself. I'm a bit nervous about dropping the engine, even just a few inches.

I gotta tell you when I did the starter on my car I didnt lower it. And it was a terrible job.
If I was going to do it again I would definetly lower the engine a few inches to give some clearance on that top starter bolt.

When I removed my starter a few months ago I fiddled for 45 minutes and was finally succesfull removing it without dropping the engine. This included disconnecting the CV joint for more room. Reinstalling the top bolt was much faster, around 10 minutes.
But now that I'm in the middle of changing my engine mounts and a few other things, I would have to say I would lower the engine. Simply get the rear of the car up on jack stands, put your jack under the center of the engine, remove the 19mm nuts attaching the engine carrier to the mounts (remove the plastic plugs in the rear tin for access, if they are still there), then place two jackstands under the heat exchangers and lower the engine down on to the stands. Leave most of the engine weight on the jack rather than the heat exchangers.
Oh, and while you're that far why not replace your engine mounts if they're shot? Might as well keep going and remove the engine carrier to weld some gussets on the ends. Hmm, since I have to remove the secondary muffler to remove the primary to get the carrier out I might as well leave it out and install a secondary bypass.
Ask me how I know this...

okay- got the old out, and new in, but I can't get the wires reconnected. I've tried to bend, ****, and shove the black wire all over and it won't go back on the post. Anyone got a shot of the wiring? I did not take pictures, and my starter is slightly different from the one pictures on the UK 964 site. Mine does not have a curved seat for the wires like it shows in the picture.

I can only find one poor pic in the Bently manual. I think it's too dark to snap and post.
It shows the engine out of the car with the starter wires coming from the rear, along the top of the starter motor and down to the right (pas side) to about the 2pm position about a third of the way back from the front end.
Don't expect that helps much; sorry.
