Default Replica 964 RS...Anyone build it?

Hi all,

Am curious if anyone here has triied to build, or knows of anyone who has done a C2 replica of the 92 Euro RS, or even a cup car. I realize there are major limitations to consider like:

Seam welded body
Thinner glass
Different suspension bits
Lighter wheels
Lt weight interior componentry
Sunroof, LSD, AC delete
Different gearing
Cage or some variant thereof
Aluminum hood, and doors
Different case and blueprinted motor
Brakes
Other weight saving measures
etc...

I realize as I write this that we're talking about a very different car here, but that being said, I'd still be interested in understanding your perspectives on this project. Some of the above mentioned items are obviously easier to attain, while other are nearly impossible.

What are your thoughts? Thanks........

Chris

Do a search here on this forum for "Racecar Project" which has many of the components you list above. This was an RSR replica though

Hi,

Sorry I don't have the link but I seem to remember that 9 M was doing something along these lines.
I remember seeing some photos of their car in white and it was more beautiful than I can describe.

Chris,
I am in the process of setting up my RSA like my RS.

I am starting with a cat bybass and a chip. The car is already lowered, it will get a LTWFW before the summer is out. From there I am going to work on the suspension and the gear box. I will keep you posted on the progress.

Correction: The RS does not have alloy doors, only alloy hood. They only came on the 3.8 RS. I want one so bad I can hardly stand it.....

Good luck with the mods. I am very currios if I can duplicate the RS feel on my RSA. Time will tell.

Good luck.

Yep, was in an Excellence and one other mag this year. Ninemeister (UK) will take your donor 964 (C2 or C4) and build an RS for you depending on how much you wish to spend. I did find this website under construction with some details

I don't really see the point in doing a RS-copy by the book. It's expensive to get some of the factory parts and there are some much better parts (even cheaper) you can put on your car instead. Go for the RSR suspension and a 996 cup LSD, money much better spent. And use macrolon instead of the thinner glass. You will never get the money back either on such a copy-project either.

But that said you could a RS/cup replica that would be a really nice and fun car. I've been working on my car for some years and I'm starting to see the end:-) . But I really love the Cup-look so this is what I've done so far:

Suspension:
-3,8 RSR coilovers
- 3,8 RSR camber plates
- RS sway bars
- PU bushings in front wishbones
- Strut brace made by Kremer

Brakes:
- Turbo 3,6 calipers front and rear
-Turbo brake bias valve
- Pagid pads
- Braided brake hoses

Steering:
- Manuall RS steering rack
- 993 steering rack brace
- RS tie rods

Engine:
- cup-pipe
-RS engine mounts
- Re-inforced engine carrier
- Cut open airbox (done by Kremer)
- Blower bypass

gearbox:
- RS/GT3 flywheel
- 996 cup preassure plate
-996 cup scinter clutch disc
- RS gear shift

Interior:
-Full roll cage from Heigo
-Sparco Evo seats
- Lightweight carpets (no sound padding)
- RS door panels
- No airbag
- radio delete with OEM cover

body:
-no sun roof
- no rear wiper
- kept the center rear bumper as on cup cars
- clear indicators
- 3,8 air ducts
- yellow lenses

Wheels:
-7,5 Cup's with Michelin cup 225
- 9 Cups with Michelin 255

Others:
- RS electrical cut of in front compartment
- small washer bottle
- But I kept the A/C!
- And finally some stickers of course!!

Thomas, I agree. I never saw any recreation project that in the end turn to be cheaper than the original.

Your car is outstanding!

Chris,
There are some better components than than factory RS stuff if you are going to bother to build car from ground up.

Joe,

Look forward to hearing about the RS America upgrade. Interested in "real world" feel difference between the RS and the RSA. Very cool!!!

Thomas,

WOW!!!! Very nice car. Thanks for listing out the various components. I wonder how much cheaper your build was compared to the current cost for a genuine RS? I love the look of your car. Can you enjoy it on the street as well as the track, or is it too focused to enjoy day to day?

I have a couple of follow up questions:

Did you start with a standard C2? If so were you able to source a sunroof delete car, or did you weld up the opening?

Did you do any motor work beyond the stock 250 HP unit?

Power windows?

Are the cup wheels Mag or Alum?

Did you change the gearing in the transmission to better mimic the RS or Cup cars?

What does your car weigh?

How much weight did you save to go with the lighter window material you installed? I've not heard of macrolon.

Again, love the look of your car. I imagine it feels fantastic. How does it compare to the real thing?

Thank You all for your input so far!!!

Thomas
What you have done is outstanding in that you have retained the orginal car but added it to make it look, in my opinion, better.
I would like to see some more pictures of the interior, engine etc because if they look as good as the exterior I could learn alot.
Congratutions on a great car.

I ended up with something quite similar, but on a 993 chassis. I'm sure pretty much everyone who was around 3-4 years ago remembers the car being built. Well, as with most things, the owner decided to move on and it dropped in my lap a few months ago. Without question this car is screwed together right. It never went to the exotic end of things with alternate body panels/sunroof removal/etc., but it is absolutely quick and predictable and...........obviously bought for pennies on the dollar.

So the basic description is 3.8L, regeared, motorsports LSD. Moton clubsports, Big Reds and lots of motorsports/RSR/GT2 parts on the rest of the suspension.

Wouldn't have mattered to me at all if this were on a 964 chassis, so if your budget can take you in that direction I doubt you'll regret the finished product.

Yellow Zonker is sure nice. I'd love to own something like that in the near future.
