Default porsch / porsha ppi results are in. Thoughts??

O.k here goes the conclusion to a previous thread some of you may remember.

cracked head light lens, rust spot on lip of hood, no signs of body work, rear tires need replacement, shocks orig fair condition, tie rod ball joints o.k, rotors fair, brakes o.k, drive shaft boots cracking, leaking valve cover gaskets, clutch good, fluids clean, ac clutch engages but no cold air. those are the highlights. Records indicate new clutch and flywheel at 70k valve cover gaskets at 90k (yet there still leaking??) service as done at an indy shop. owner asking 15 will take 14.. what do you think?? Thanks in advance.

Year? C2? C4? Coupe? Targa? Cab? Miles????????????
Will you fix all the things that need attention or have it done at a specialist?

Just looked at the other thread..

1990 C4, 95,000 miles.

What color is it? Presume its a coupe?

UNLESS its a basket case 14k sounds like a good deal for almost any 964 under 100k surely?

Crap....I'm going to start buying these cars and parting them out for more then the purchase price.

Sounds like a fair deal. Fun car, let us know if you buy it.

Any 17 year old car is going to have a some things that need to be addressed, and from the PPI it doesn't sound too bad given the price. If you are planning to do most work yourself this may be a good deal. If you plan to have a shop work on your car (like I do), go into this with your eyes open. Sorting a few oil leaks, replacing shocks/struts, new tires, and replacing an A/C compressor could easily put you into the $20k's for your overall investment.

However if the valve cover gasket leak is no big deal and the A/C just needs a recharge (or you don't care about A/C), and the shocks are ok (after 17 years and 95k miles?) then you may have minimal additional investment.

When I bought my '91 C4 it was about like what you have described. The previous owner had just spent about $5K resolving oil leaks, and I spent close to that again on shocks/struts, A/C service, new tires, and some other soon discovered nits (spoiler controller, blower motor).

Did you have a leakdown test as part of the PPI? I guess a potential rebuild would be the next biggest concern. 14k is very reasonable, just be aware there are repairs that could add substantially to that.

For folks that work on their own cars there are clearly some very good bargains that can be had, because labor is a large part of bringing the car to tip-top shape. Since you will have work done in a shop, go in with your eyes open as to what the true costs could be. I wish I had the time and expertise to do my own work because I think it would be very rewarding as well as much less money. Such is life.

matt great advise. that's my concern, do I spent the 22 to 25k on a mint car or take the plunge on this one?? I too wish I had more time and know how to do the work myself.

I would say 14k is a good price.
Depressing for those of us who already own the cars, But a good price.

Buy it. Good price, and you can upgrade and do the work you want, and know what's done.

I figure I spent about 5K once I got the car, and I thought it was in good shape too. Part of the 5K was tires, shocks, springs, CB and alignment to about 2K of that. Don't ask where the rest went.

If your choice is to buy a mint one for $22 to $25k or one in need of repair, definitely buy the mint one. The parts to these cars are very expensive as is the labor. If you need the engine rebuilt it could cost $12k in parts and labor alone- and that is before they find any other problems which they always do (see many "slippery slope" threads in this forum.) I originally bought a driver in need of "minor" repairs and it has cost me much more than double the price of the car to bring it to my standards. Money I will never get back in the event I sell it. I looked at a few mint ones prior to making my purchase and I still kick myself for not paying the extra $s at the time. Live and learn.

$14K is a no brainer if those are the only issues w. the car.
