Question 964 vrs 993c2s

Gentlemen

First time Porshe buyer here trying to learn everything I can before making a leap. here is my question. If you were to make a choice between A 91-94
964 or 95-98 C2S which would you pick,ie perforamance handling ,speed sound cost benifit etc being the criteria.I love the old rear wing but prefer the nose of the 993.Cant justify teh 993 turbo from a price standpoint,Plese advise Thanks Rw

For the same price of course the C2S.

If you can get a widebody 964, that would be a close 2nd.

It has been my experience that the 993's is not as raw as the 964's. I have not driven a C2S to compare, but I imagine it is similar to a regular 993 with harder suspension.

Performance wise, 964 & 993 are fairly close and each generation has their own quirks mechanically. Neither is cheap on maintenance, but I would probably leap into a C2S if cost is not an issue.

It's a matter of personal opinion ... and everybody's going to have his/her own. The 993 is prettier (I think) ... but it will probably cost you about twice as much as a 964. 964s seem to be a little harder to find nowadays than they were a few years ago. Performance potential is probably higher with the 964. If you think you'll ever decide to track the car, I'd probably go with the 964. But there are trade-offs ... they're both great cars. Depends on which one you like better. Good luck ... and have fun looking.

Dave Morris should know (nice to see you at the Glen, Dave). If you don't plan on tracking the car, a '98 C2S will hold its value better than a comparable 964 (964 cups excepted). 993 C2S' were only available in '97 and '98. The 993 C4S, while more expensive when new than the C2S, has not held its value as well as the coveted '98 C2S, considered by many to be the last and greatest iteration of the air-cooled, flat six powerplant.

They're both fantastic cars. I love the looks of the 993, but a lowered 964 with handsome wheels is absolutely gorgeous, too. I have had very few non-maintenance costs with my 993 (broken shifter fork, very, very lightly weeping RMS replaced during a "while we're in there" event). When I was a noob, I stayed clear of 964's, but now that I know a little bit more, I wouldn't hesitate to jump on a 964.

Good luck with your search!

as Dave Morris stated the C2S will cost twice what a nice 964 would. Plus the 964 has probably reached the bottom of its depreciation curve whereas the 993s proably have a bit more downside. You should also keep in mind the dreaded check engine light problem on the 96 and on 993s (do a search on 993 forum)and engine leaks/flywheel problems on 89-91 964s-get a PPI on any car before you buy! I also seem to recall contemporary road tests where they preferred the narrow body 993 over the wide body cars. Drive them all before making a decision.

I just bought my 964. If I would have found a similar condition 993 C2S it easily would have been $10-15k more. Based upon my budget the decision was obvious.
This 964 rennlist group is also great.

Don't forget the 993C2S doesn't have any of the turbo or C4S goodies ie, suspension and brakes, apart from looks has very little (unless I missed something) to distinguish it from the narrowbody 993.

Good catch... I think the only the C4S used the turbo brakes & other suspension goodies.

Not to steal the thread with photos but I would agree about the looks of a 964 lowered and some handsome wheels. That said, the widebody 933 look of a C2S or C4S from behind is awesome.

I go back and forth. Ask me tommorow and I may change my mind.

Spent all weekend in the 993 Cab. The sound is fantastic (motor sound pack), they drive very good. But they feel so much bigger than my 964 RS and RSA. They are very comfortable and easy to shift and drive. The 6th gear is nice at 80 on the freeway.

A RS America is a closer comparison to the C2S. It would be a great choice. They are somewhat under valued for what they are and a great car to drive. All they need is to be lowered a little and enjoy. On spirited drives there is nothing more balanced than the RSA or the RS.

If you want a car that looks great, feels a little bigger but rides a little better get the C2S. They are the best looking Porsche ever made. People will notice the C2S alot more.

Both cars are great cars. The 993 may have a little better track record for reliablity and is easier to find a low mile example. The 964 is at the bottom. They will surpass a regular 993 in value the next 5 years. They will never cacth the C2S.

It all comes down to your driving style. The 964 is a more enjoyable car to drive at the limits.

Go drive them both back to back. One will stand out over the other.
