Default Slave cylinder replacement

My slave cylinder is going bad. I got a quote for $300 installed from Chris Powell Geman Auto. Part is $150. DIY makes it sound doable, but for $150 I am thinking maybe it is better to just let them do it.

$150 for jacking up the car , taking the old cyl off , putting another back on , bleeding the system and then do some sort of guaranty .

It is a real simple job but it can be an extreme PITA. The main trick with this is to lower the engine and transmission. Otherwise you can spend hours on your back fiddling around and cursing this place for giving you the idea to DIY.

Thanks, but the thought of lowering the engine and transmission scares me. I like the thought of doing things myself, but to save $150 or risk paying a lot more to fix my f-up is not something I pine for.

I did mine myself, but it is a right royal.....I could see the slave, or touch it, but not both.....

I guess including changing the flexi hose which I would almost certainly recommend it took 2-3 hours. Car on jacks, wheel off, flexible heating hose off, and complete hydraulic bleed.
My flexi hose was shot, I could push my finger nail in, and literally scrap tons of rubber off, it was as soft a a soft thing..

I would gladly pay 150 for someone to do this job for me again (if it had to be done). It was the most pita thing I've done on my car.

I completely agree. Pay the $300, it's well worth it.

Also buy a new clutch hose. Cut of the old hose. This makes it easier to remove the slave cylinder and fit the new one. The clutch hose is cheap and it probably as old as your car....

Had mine replaced about a year ago; cost about $110 for the slave and the hose. I paid a local mechanic $177 to replace them. He said it took him (and, at times, two of his helpers) about 1.5 hours to do the job, most of it spent bleeding the system using my Motive bleeder. Later, he said he bought two of the bleeders for his shop's use, he was so impresssed with it. All in, best money I've spent on repairs.

bleeding can be a PITA as well as getting out the slave cylinder.
150 does not seem too bad
