Default Body Colour

What is the general consensus on Grand Prix White body colour?

I would NEVER have bought a white car in a thousand years, but when I found my car, it had an impecable history, very well kept, and once I saw it, it started to grow on me. After 1 month of ownership, I have done a complete back-flip on my view towards white (al least for 911's!). I think it really suits the classic shape, and if anything, white is a little "retro" so it looks even more of a classic. Also, the "white" Porsche uses is a slightly warm white, not that cold arctic white on modern cars. It has a richness, creamy almost, that just makes it look right.

Gray and Silver were my preferred colours, but now I believe that they look too modern for the classic lines. I could go for a black one, but have never seen an original black 964. Was this a factory option?

Does a white car affect the resale value or appeal? From what I have read, white also appears to be Porsche's "official" colour (like red for Ferrari). New GT2/3's seem to be mostly white.

The color is Grand Prix White. Can't argue with a name like that.

A lot of guys on Rennlist with white cars will also tell you that the White cars are specially tuned from the factory to be faster than all the other colors.

I never would have bought a white one either but this one came along and I had to jump on it. My interior color is black and I like the black and white look now.

I think you answered your own question :

I was the same as you - and I liked my car in white when I bought it. But when I tried selling it a year ago I do believe the colour counted against it. When people see them, I think they like them - but many potential buyers won't even look at it 'cos it's white.

Yes DaveK. I think you have nailed it. Buyers skip over them in the ads, but they need to be seen in the "flesh" to be appreciated.

Thanks for the tip ducnine, mine DOES go faster than the others

I would bet black has been in the color palate for 911's continuously since 1965... Black was a standard color for 964's.

Mine is original black, so yes it has been standard for 964.

Sorry guys, the expression isn't "Ticket-Me Black" (or White, or Green..)

It's "Ticket-Me Red".

But those other colors are ok too.

I've never been a fan of white cars, but there's someone around town driving a white 993 that is a real looker. My brother is looking for an older 911 right now, we just drove a Euro '77 3.0 that was white, and that car looked great in person. I would have skipped it sight unseen, but white is near the top of the color palette for my brother.

White is the lightest paint and why Porsche used it on their race cars. Black of course being the heaviest...some of those metalics might be equally as heavy as black.

White is timeless and always in vogue. What color did Porsche choose to launch the new GT3 in????

I have some technical proof on why white cars are FASTER than red or black cars (or any other colour).

All colours in the visible light spectrum are absorbed by a white, whereas, for example a red car "reflects" the red hues in the spectrum... now here is the biggie... this creates EXTRA FRICTION, bouncing all those red photon particles off the body.

You can test for this yourselves, but please note, the angle of the sun can affect the results. You can actually notice this driving into a setting sun. If the sun is directly overhead, then the red car is being "pushed" into the tarmac (gives you slightly better grip though). Driving into a setting sun, and the white car is faster, as the red car is being pushed back with all the photons bouncing off the front (like driving into a photon hailstorm!), BUT, if driving with a low setting sun at the rear, red car is "pushed" along, gaining a slight advantage.

Bet you didn't find that information in Adrians book!

964 and earlier cars are COOL in white !!!
them and mark1 golf cabrio clippers are the only cars that look good in white ( on the road !! )
race cars with sponsors logos are different again , and most look good in white , but road cars .......... NO !!

metalic cars are slower , because of the metal-flakes in the paint adding extra wieght !!!
