964 with Pre-1973 body work
Hi Guys,
I usually don't post over here, I actually have a 996 and have posted there a few times.
This weekend I was at Barnes and Noble and saw an article in some Porsche Mag for a 964 with pre-1973 body work in Signal Green. I have wanted an older 911 for the longest time, but wasn't sure I could really deal with a car that old, both in terms of maintenence or driveability, but thought this was an interesting idea.
So, I guess I would get a mechanically sound but not cosmetically perfect 964 and strip it down, get the older body panels on and then repaint the whole thing in a 70's color like Signal Red, Green, Yellow, etc, and it would look like a classic 911, but would have the feel of a more modern Porsche on the inside and in terms of driveability.
What do you guys think of this? Is there anyone on the forums who has taken on such a project before? Does anyone know a shop in Massachusetts that could do work like this? I was figuring 10-15K for the car. And then another 7-8K in bodywork and paint.
Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks alot.

it will be hard to find a car in the 10-15K price range with a decent motor unless its a salvage wreck or you are really lucky.

There is a guy here that did the mods on a 964. Car came out great!

The reason why I thought I could get one in this price range is because I looked at a '91 964 with 95K miles in really nice shape for 15,500, but didn't get the car in the end. Maybe I should have picked that one up.

If that car is still for sale post the info I will buy it.

Burning Brakes
Have you considered retro-era fiberglass parts (e.g. Getty Design) on fenders, qps, hood, and tail? Might even be cheaper than getting a pristine set of metal from that era, and if you stick with metal doors, I don't think you're sacrificing safety. You'd also lose a good 125+ pounds from the 964 panels.

I don't think you could ever get the feeling of an RS or RSR in these cars because you can never get them down to the weight needed.

I was actually never looking to do any RS or RSR. Although I think they are really cool looking, I just wanted a clean looking pre-1973 look in an "era correct" color like Signal Red, Yellow or Green or maybe even silver with the creature comforts of a more modern car like a 964. But to each there own, I agree that you will never get the RS feel unless you drop ALOT of weight.
