Having owned am 86 Carrera, and looking for something a little bit more friendly for a daily driver, I drove everything from 964's to 996's. I thought I wanted a 993C4S or C2S, but dang, I just couldn't pull the trigger due to the $ premium. The 996 was too small on the inside, and in the end, my wife and I just really liked the classic looks of the 964. I couldn't tell that much of a difference between the interiors of the 964 and the 993.

I chose a lower mile 964 turbo, knowing that there would be some additional expenses assosciated with it but how could you pass this up?

girlracer.. take the time and drive examples of each. The cars are suprisingly similar and yet different. 5spd vs 6sp; 270-2820hp vs 247hp... interiors are similar but there will be small differences.. Some say the 964's are a bit more "fun" or "livelier" than the 993's. The 993's don't need valve adjustments.. the 964's do. Tire sizes are similar (205/255s when equipped with 17's). It may just come down to the options/colors you want. Style, is subjective of course, but in fact it may just come down to that!

I think I might be biased, but I'd still have to say that you need to find the best example that "really does something for you" for the money. Both cars are great with their own pros and cons.

Good luck in any search.

Darn right the 993 won... cause its newer and more advanced and technologically better..

For me that is not a surprise but expected. I would have been bad if the older 964 had won...

But I don't know if many replies on this thread argue that... I suppose for some of us newer is not necessarily better

The 964 is without a doubt the more classic looking car. Later on, the cars start to suffer from too much rounding off, until the most recent 911s are not looking much different from a Toyota, Merc, BMW and the other clones.

Now for some more useful input: the latest edition of Excellence magazine is covering the models you are interested in, and has an in depth price guide.

huh I'll give you that the 996 is about a generic as the 911 line has ever been, but a clone of a Honda, Bimmer, Toyota? That's a wee bit of a stretch. My 993 gets more compliments from guys driving cars worth many times my car's value because it embodies the last "great" 911 with no compromises.

And that Excellence assesement is about a good 10 grand off across the board. I don't know where those guys get their numbers, but from what sells here on Renn and other boards, they are way to low in the overall market assessment IMO

+1 on the Excellence pricing,... how can they now know that people will laugh at them? Pretty out of touch. Crazy stuff.

"Last great 911 with no compromises" is also a bit of a stretch. My 996 is not what I would call generic or compromised.

You're absolutely right, yours isn't generic (per say), but its also not a 996 its a Turbo.....completely different. Having said that, the 996's (including Turbos) do still share alot of Boxster parts (especially NA's) which in my book, makes it more "generic" as apposed to earlier year 911's.
Now I wouldn't say that the 993 is compromised as compared to earlier 911's. Everything about the 993 is ahead of the 964, which is ahead of the carrera's etc. Thats the evolution of a model. Porsche was almost bankrupt during the 993 years and gave their flagship the "one last hurrah". The 996/Boxster series saved them because of the cost cutting (sharing of parts) and mass production. There are problems with every car every model. I'm not dis'ing your car or anyone else's, just interjecting a little fact with some opinion.......no offense

Well, it's subjective, but IMHO the 964 shape is much superior, classier and classic than the 993 (Of course, the price of 964s is also much in their favour, compared with 993s.)

An Aston Martin DB7 was parked next to me in the car park today ... it could have been any car, it was so, well, "bleh". Compared with, say, a DB5 it looked awfully boring. Same with Mercedes, BMW ... the latest models are almost indistinguishable from Hondas, whereas ten years ago they were unmistakeable and instantly recognizable.

I'm not trying to be provocative, but I think car styling has gone down the tubes in the last twenty years or so, and that includes at Stuttgart.
