Engine removal question, thottle cable?
Lot’s of great information here on engine removal. The only question I have is on the throttle cable removal. It appease from Adrian’s book that you disconnect the cable from the pedal cluster in the driver’s foot well. Is this correct?
Thanks guys, this place is great.
I disconnected the throttle cable from the throttle body. Now I still have the throttle cable bracket with the throttle cable connected to it attached to the engine. Do I need to drop the engine to gain access to the throttle cable bracket to remove it from the engine? I don’t think I can gain access to the bracket mounting screws (bolts?) with the engine fully installed. Also, what is the other cable for which attaches to the throttle body via the half circle cam mechanism? Does this cable need to be removed as well or does this stay with the engine?

I disconnected the throttle cable at the pedal cluster and then just pulled it through the housing. When you go to reinstall it, just feed it back through the tunnel and up to the pedals.

Just pull the rubber grommet out of the bracket and slide the cable towards the front of the car. If you haven't already, you will need to remove the oval plastic clip that seats at the end of the cable, in order to get the rest of the cable through the bracket. THe grommet is a real pain to put back in however. You can drop the engine part way to get more room.

I always remove it at the pedal cluster - it's really simple to do. The reinstallation used to be the most difficult part, until I learned an easy way (after doing this about 20 times the hard way)!
Reinstallation the hard way: using your hands to grip the gas pedal and with all your might, press back in the actuating rod into the plastic gas pedal. That part sucks.
Reinstallation the easy way: get your wife/friend/whatever to hold the throttle lever in the engine compartment, and simply press the gas pedal against the rod - it will easily snap back in!

Two reasons not to disconnect the cable at the pedal cluster and pull it through:
1. It's easier to disconnect it at the engine.
2. Disconnecting at the engine avoids having the throttle cable still attached to the engine while you are removing it and working on it (assuming this is the reason you're disconecting it in the first place). The actual cable is in a blue plastic or composite tube to reduce friction and the tube, while flexible enough to be loosely coiled, can be damaged if you step on it or drop something on it (ask me how I know).

Thanks everyone for all your help. The engine is out and now I proceed with the rebuild. I ended up disconnecting the throttle cable from the engine. For reinstallation I think I will try disconnecting the cable from the gas pedal, pulling it out of the tunnel a bit , and attaching it to the engine while I have a little more room before the engine is completely up into place. Kind of the best of both worlds I think. Thanks again for the help. I’m sure I will have more questions as I get into the engine.
